The Stray Gators were Tim Drummond on Bass, Ken Buttrey on Drums, and Jack Nitzsche on piano. The version on Harvest also had Stills and Nash doing background vocals. Jack Nitzsche also did the orchestral arrangements on A Man Needs A Maid and There's a World

Neil Young has always been woefully discounted as a guitar player. He is simply one of the best, period. I am moving him up to my top 8. I like his playing better than Clapton, not that Clapton is bad, but Young's taste and emphasis is just perfect, much better than Stills, though similar. Another woefully discounted guitarist has always been Messina, whom I consider better than Stills as well. The big negative about the BS reunion was that Messina should clearly have been in the group, either as another guitarist or the bass player. I don't know of a better Telly player. It is the sweetness of Young, Messina, and Keaggy's leads that are above most others. Oh, and drop Zappa in there as well. And I agree with the guy below on the steel pedal in this song. The best steel pedal of all too me is the ending by Sneaky Pete on Chistine's Song.

Just a note - this song does not include Crazy Horse. Nor did any of the songs on the Harvest album. His backing band here was called The Stray Gators.

This is so honestly written and recorded. Crazy Horse is definitely the second best backing band in the world according to Neil, but who's better?

One of the things that makes this song so beautiful, apart from the ragged sound, Neil's guitar and singing, the ploddy bass and drums and the piano, is the searing pedal steel guitar especially in the fadeout - I just drift off on it. Masterpiece.
