Modest Mouse est un groupe indie rock Américain. Le groupe a été formé en 1993 à Issaquah, Washington par le chanteur/parolier/guitariste Isaac Brock et est constitué du batteur Jeremiah Green, du bassiste Eric Judy, et par la suite du guitariste Dann Gallucci.
Cependant, depuis leur premier album en 1996 This Is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about, la composition du groupe a changé régulièrement, avec notamment le départ de Dann Gallucci.
L’ancien guitariste de The Smiths Johnny Marr rejoint le groupe en mai 2006, pour travailler sur l’album We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank.
Modest Mouse est aujourd’hui connu pour le zozottement de son chanteur.
Depuis qu’ils ont signé avec Sony’s Epic Records en 2000, le groupe a atteint un succès très important. Modest Mouse s’inspire et a souvent été comparé à Elliott Smith, Pixies, Built to Spill, et d’autres nombreux groupes de rock alternatif.
Leur nom provient d’un passage de l’histoire de Virginia Woolf « The Mark on the Wall » (le passage dit: « … and very frequent even in the minds of modest mouse-coloured people… »).

Modest Mouse is popular because of 2 singles: Dashboard and Float On. They're both alright in their own respect, but speaking for a lot of the fans out there, the hits don't even scratch the surface. Modest Mouse has some of the most layered, complex-meaning, raw songs of any artist to date. They're fantastic and they deserve all the fame they get, even if it might not be for their best work.
