so, our mate Quinny is only young - born in 1987, he missed out on the majority of the whole britpop thing that defined most of our childhoods. lucky him, you might say, and you're probably right... but there's a large part of me that feels the need to educate our young friend about those heady, carefree days of yore...

to this extent, i've made the boy a mix... that became two mixes... that's now expanded to a hundred song playlist, dredging up a number of long forgottens that even i hardly gave time for 14 years ago...

inspiration came from a number of Shine compilations, as well as free CDs from the likes of Select, Vox, NME and Melody Maker still knocking around my bedroom. and of course, my own dodgy library of near hit singles and nomark albums i've gathered together in roughly 15 years of never throwing anything away.

i remember back in the day, beyond the obvious stuff carried forward on such compilations, some of the more interesting / obscure / flash in the pan…

This list is mainly for me. A record of over 25 years of gig and festival going.

First ever gig: The Cult at Wembley Arena in 1987, followed some months later by Cardiacs in Maidstone Kent Hall in June 1988. The first a large scale stadium gig; the second a small sweaty affair with from memory about 75 people. Cardiacs were superb but the gig was interrupted by a fire alarm half way through. I remember huddling on a fire escape while the building was checked before we could go back in and the gig resumed. Still one of the best gigs I have been to.

Most recent: Low in Bristol, April 2013.

Best gigs: stand outs include Pixies, Leonard Cohen, Paul McCartney, The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev on a double bill, Cardiacs at Maidstone in 1988 and at The Thekla in Bristol twenty years later, and of course The Fall (every single gig!).

Worst gig: Meat Loaf in 2008. Open air gig, terrible sound, Meat Loaf seemed to be stumbling over the words and was out of tune. And it rained.

So here's the deal. Imagine the greatest ever club night - the theme, the dress code, the music, everything! What would it be and why?

Here's Mine:

Name: Suited & Booted

When: Fridays (twice a month!)

Where: Central London (not too fussed about the venue!)

Dress code: Feather Boas, PVC, Knee-high boots (or larger), Funky Ties, Glitter, Sparkles, Waistcoats, Velvet, Dress suits, Suits - any of the above, so basically dress over the top!

Music Policy: Chamber Pop, New Romantic, Glam Rock, New Rave, Electropop and Britpop - artists such as:

The B-52's, Blondie, Blur, CSS, The Dandys, The Darkness, David Devant & His Spirit Wife, Divine Comedy, Erasure, Fight Like Apes, Garbage, Goldfrapp, Gorillaz, The Gossip, The Gresham Flyers, Human League, The Jam, James, Ladytron, Le Tigre, Lightning Seeds, Magnetic Fields, Marc Almond, Menswear, Mika, My Life Story, New Young Pony Club, Patrick Wolf, The Pipettes, Pulp, Rialto, Robots in Disguise, Shampoo, Sleeper…

Opening up tonight are the quite new Hamburg based band, The Glam. The name is slightly misleading for the older ones amongst us who will probably immediately imagine flares, platform boots, Slade and The Sweet. The Glam are no 70's platform boot wearing band with perms. At a quick glance I'm remided more of English band Menswear, crossed with Radiohead and Suede. Frontman Frederic has a delightful voice sounding not unlike Brett Anderson, and along with his long highlighted fringe is very stylishly dressed. You've either got it or you haven't, and Frederic does. It may be a bit rough round the edges yet in these early days of the band, but with more gigs I would imagine he'll soon develop into quite a charismatic frontman. The Glam are very English sounding and very decadent. …

I've been meaning to do this for ages but have only just got round to finishing it off in any spare time I get.

So, here's a list of bands I've seen from April 1986 (Twisted Sister) to 9 November 2009 (Motorhead and Sweet Savage).

I'm pretty sure there are loads more I've forgotten but I'll update it as and when I remember.

Anything with an asterisk are bands I've seen more than once. I think Nick Cave (solo and with his Bad Seeds) is at the top with ten combined gigs.

Not that anyone cares...it's just me being anal ;-)
