they hopefully play a well balanced mixture of all their stuff on their concerts because "fair youth" doesn't rock at all so far, it's almost cosy to listen to :( glorious were those times when he filmed the clouds while paris hilton had sex with ghosts..

Awesome albumm! My fav in amber, sanctuary, volga! But co-conspirators still the best. Come to Indonesia please. Make some outdoor concert in a great landscape. It will be great. Nature + Maybeshewill yeah.

And I can totally see myself sipping a nice cocktail in some lounge bar with this album quietly playing in the background. That's not how I like to picture the sound of Maybeshewill. [2] totally agree, but it is enjoyable anyway

I'm not even mad about it being softer, it just sounds less dynamic than the last three.

I must say, as a big fan of their earlier albums, especially appreciating the harder elements in Not For Want of Trying and Sing the Word Hope in Four-Part Harmony, I was kind of let down the first moment. The album sounded a lot more like The American Dollar-release than a Maybeshewill piece. But, eventually, the thing keeps growing. In Amber, Permanence and Volga are absolutely awe-inspiring pieces of music, and the album has no foul spot. I doubt that Fair Youth will ever out-rank the other works by this band, but if This Will Destroy You want their 'Album of the Year' title from me, they'll have to deliver quite a big piece in order to beat Fair Youth, which is without question an amazing piece of work. Not to mention where this album might rank in a month or three, if it keeps growing the way it did the first few days. Maybeshecantproducebadmusic. [2]

After reading comments here regarding the lack of the usual "heaviness" in "Fair Youth", I was expecting to be listening to a Sigur Rós/EitS album. Listening to "Fair Youth" for the first time right now, it seems to be more of a less chaotic, mellower 65dos album. Less math-rock, more post-rock and even more electronic in places. Personally, I feel that the "heaviness" in their sound was what set them apart from the shitload of other post-rock bands out there. Enjoyable as it is, "Fair Youth" does not pull me in as their previous efforts did. It's a nice post-rock album, just an underachieving Maybeshewill one.

Fair Youth? This piece of crap is just emotionless! Perhaps a nice soundtrack for girls to get bikini wax. As elevating as it can be.

Also, I agree with the people below wondering why 'softer' has such a negative connotation. It's such an annoying habit for fans to want a 'harder' sound for their bands to make. But the issue with Fair Youth is not about softness for me. The album just lacks a special something...

Hmm, have to agree with the naysayers sadly. Sounds like what you'd hear on a Vimeo clip about a rich douchebag traveling the world with a GoPro strapped to his head. I dunno, maybe it's a grower or sounds better live.

Softer, but it still worth it. New album is nice. Probably we'll have to wait to see another I Was Here For A Moment, Then I Was Gone or another Not For Want Of Trying. Still a great album, very sweet.

People who complain about new album should understand that artists not always want to play in the same pattern. Sometimes they need new approach to music and it can reveal in completly different sound. I think new album is great and I'm looking forward to next one.

For me the latest album is not a step forward, it's just different Maybeshewill sound - calm and tranquil. It sounds like more a background music for videos and looks like a quickie because I don't hear the guitar sound like in "Sing the Word Hope in Four-Part Harmony" :(. Album is not so melancholic as previous albums, when I listen it I don't feel sad. I'd rather say It's more positive and motivational for me than previous albums. Yea, and I miss these explosive and catchy moments.

(By "the mixing got better", in my last shout, I surely meant that my ears became more acclimated to it and I seemed to be less bothered as the album went on. For better or worse, their mixing is consistent throughout.) // I do hope they reach out beyond their comfort zone of songwriting for the next record, but I kind of doubt we'll get the "crunchy" Maybeshewill that's featured on Not For Want Of Trying. I think that if Fair Youth was just lightly sprinkled with more riffs (see: To The Skies From A Hillside) it could easily retain its beauty with a bit more variety.

  • Derek-H

@ WindWaker: agreed that the mixing is a little jarring at first. I feel like it got better[?], but the "pop" at the beginning of In Amber just didn't quite hit me like I thought a proper rip would. As far as my standout tracks? I quite like In Amber. It's jam packed with classic Maybeshewill piano lines and flow, in my books, though I do think it meanders just a bit towards the 75% mark or so. Fair Youth is pretty great in my books; the subdued bits with the synth feel like a throwback to their older work, and there's some great "triumphant" vibes with the way that brass is incorporated. Asiatic is pretty beautiful, though I can help but feel like they're trying to rehash the signature hand clapping. In The Blind is so good to me, too, for whatever reason. Love the way it builds and sprawls from the beginning. And I also think Volga ends the record on a very sweet note. This is all my early opinion so far. Your mileage my vary.

  • The_WindWaker

What standout tracks? And yes, it sounds like there're no riffs at all. I can't stand the mixing. Well let's hope it'll sound better live.

Also, to reiterate what trutek122 said, please do yourselves a favor and obtain a proper copy of the album. If you're not going to support the artist, at least get a rip of the album as they intended it to be heard. The majority of the copies surfacing at the moment have the proper track titles in order, but the actual audio isn't properly synced with the titles. For clarification on track titles and their correct length, try here.

Not that anyone asked, but since we're sharing our first impressions – I think the album is decent. As a fairly big fan of the band's prior work, I'd love to say that it's incredible and everything I was hoping for... but so far I can only really say that it's good. "Nice", even. The consistency is a double-edged sword; the whole album feels very cohesive and thematic to me, but I can see how others can interpret it as "too same-sounding". The standout tracks aren't nearly as infectious as something like Critical Distance, and no explosive moments can touch the finale of their last album. I also miss the earlier material (loaded with riff and piano interplay) but I respect the band for continuing to evolve their sound. I can see myself really enjoying this in a few more weeks, with periodic listens... but the people who are saying it lacks the usual "umph" are probably right. This feels like a streamlined, shimmery Maybeshewill – not so much of their crunchier, energetic suit.

GreyDadel: read pls. Even subbing out "rock" for "pop", the first paragraph alone doesn't stand up. "Post-pop is a subgenre of pop music characterized by the influence and use of instruments commonly associated with pop, but using rhythms and “guitars as facilitators of timbre and textures” not traditionally found in pop." You may not be enamored with the album after a handful of listens - most likely by way of a poor rip, before it's even officially released - but to say it sounds like an instrumental Katy Perry track is too left-field of a comparison. Sorry.

Strong album. Speaking as a fan going back as far as NFWOT it's nice to see them broaden their aesthetic horizons(wtf accordion). I expect this to grow on me like all their previous efforts. They had a vision that really vibes with me, and that vision remains intact i'm glad to say. To the band: You'll get a lot of hate for the unfocused song structures, but that's what all new progressive music is at first. We'll adjust, just continue writing from the soul. This shit sounds real af. Keep up the good work you damn brits.
