Still chugging through october as Free Music Month

After only 2½ weeks into "Bean's Free Music Month," I have already supplanted half of my commercial top artists. These are the artists I miss. Those 4 right there: VAST, Neverending White Lights,dredg (probably most of all) and The Crystal Method. There are others, like Matthew Good (new album and all. I miss his voice.), Disturbed, Godsmack.
Tell you what, though. When the month is over, I'm going to be real selective about the music I listen to because I've found that if you're willing to keep looking, you'll find something that suits your tastes. Freedom of choice will allow you to keep seeking out new music and allowing you the luxury to discard that which doesn't suit your tastes without risk.
I really miss Neverending White Lights, but Chronique and Tryad can fill that void.

It Was You After All

I've always been a great admirer of Matti Paalanen's work and so I decided to contact him and propose to do a collaboration project on a song.
He improvised the basic structure with piano and added some ambient pads and sent the outcome to me. I then went on to add drums, bass, vocals and guitars.
The final result is a song called "It was you after all (feat. The 7th Guest)". The outcome is, as Matti puts it, "a morphed child of Frozen Silence and The 7th Guest".

Music for Free: User artists on Last.fm

There are some artists on Last.fm who I only got to know through Last.fm. I'm not talking about those I simply didn't listen to in the stores but about those who use this platform as a forum to promote and present their own music - generously for free. I'd like to collect the "good ones" ;o) and start with user Michikawa and his several projects of which I like Frozen Silence best.

Twenty five years ago you couldn't have done what Matti does and have anyone other than your friends hear it. You could have gone to Folk City, which later became known by some other name, and your friends and two drunk chicks from Connecticutt would have heard you.
A lot has happened-- not least of which are Logic Pro and the capabilities of your friendly neighborhood Macintosh. Still, tech can't explain or motivate talent; it's usually the other way around. The tech savvy who are also classically trained musicians are the ones rolling pearls all over the internet from Last.fm to iCompositions. I recently downloaded a tune called "Trotsky At The Cell Phone Shop from the latter sute and it has regular shuffle play on my iTunes.
Kinda makes me want to pick up the guitar again, but meanwhile, coming across the work of Matti Paalanen will suffice, and probably more than, the pleasure of stimulating my own fret board. Apple's iTunes store and their iP{od have done amazing things for music lovers, things unheard of. …
