Just heard recently that it was Stevie Wonder who encouraged Marvin to write his own stuff. If Stevie's output wasn't enough we have him partly to thank for Marvin's work- staggering.

I agree w/ "criminally underrated" guy. Its eroticism seeps like prime maple syrup. I loved it from day one.

This is such an self-indulgent release I think, even though most of the tunes are originally from Leon Ware, the subject matter is so Marvin Gaye. I admire the cohesiveness of this record, it's very smooth, but almost too smooth. I think Gaye really perfected his vocal layering technique on this album and took it too a further extent than his previous releases. Now, I say it's almost too smooth a suite of songs because, while it does compliment Gaye's vocal layering ability and pushes forth his erotic nature, it doesn't quite allow for as much power, angst, or strain to be exhibited in his singing as the songs on Let's Get It On do.

Much credit also to Leon Ware for these great tunes. I could not imagine any other to perform the songs though, than Marvin. This voice...,.Definitely get the DELUXE Editions of this album, the re-mixes and alternate versions are such great variations, finally like them better than the original ones.

actually, i think, this was a breakthru album and a nice deviation from his usual (read "predictable"?) work. postdating tough love times, you absorb the work organically and immediately. aartim, below, called it "sophisticated" and she's right.too bad the actual versions we hear here are not duplicative of the original recording.

A great continuation of the style he mastered on Let's Get It On. Come Live With Me Angel might be my favorite Marvin Gaye song.

There's an art to being sexy, yet sophisticated. Marvin mastered that art and then some. People get desperate and try way too hard; he's so effortless and sensual. Start taking notes ;)

My favourite, even though Marvin had little songwriting involvement.

Agreed....fiyah album. Hear My Dear is a major sleeper too....that joint has nothing but creativity on it! He was in another zone on it.

Sad this album doesn't get the last.fm recognition it deserves. Love this album....and definitely a knickers off record.
