Les Savy Fav (pronounced lay-SAH-vee-FAHV) is a New York City band that produces idiosyncratic indie rock. Their style is heavily influenced by Art rock and Post-hardcore.
The group’s original line-up, formed in 1995, all met while attending the Rhode Island School of Design.
The band is known for angular, abrasive guitar and bass melodies, complemented by singer Tim Harrington’s educated, poetic lyrics sung or shouted over the instruments. Harrington’s involved lyrics make broad-ranging academic references to such disparate topics as Stockholm syndrome, the architects of Carthage, and palimpsests.
The band has a highly-regarded live show due to the antics of frontman Harrington, including kissing multiple audience members and on-stage wardrobe changes. These antics, however, rarely seem to faze the rest of the band as they continue to play as if nothing out of the ordinary is happening.
The band started a planned hiatus in mid-2005, which led to speculation that they might have broken up, but lead Harrington confirmed that Les Savy Fav would return [1], and indeed they did, playing a notable live performance at the British All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in May 2007. The band booked studio time in November 2006 to record their fourth full length, Let’s Stay Friends, released September 18, 2007. The band is running a video contest on YouTube for « The Equestrian, » a song from their new album. [2][3]. On January 31, 2008, the band performed live on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

As far as their output goes, I know it's silly to expect new material any time soon, but I would really love if they'd release something new... An EP or singles would be fine, considering ROME and a lot of the singles that made up Inches are some of the best things they've released. [2]

I just got Inches today, and it is fantastic. I got Cat and Cobra 5 years ago and never bothered getting any of the other albums until Let's Stay Friends came out. I think when I got Cobra it just blew me away to the point where I didn't think any of the other albums could be as good. But I thought since I'm going to finally get to see them I might as well get the back catalogue. It is a great album, but Cobra is still the superior.

From time to time, typically when I listen to one of their records, I'm reminded how special this band are. Given the volume of bands I adore I couldn't even class them as one of my absolute favourites without neglecting overall better loved artists, but there's just something amazing about them. I was going to say no one does the thing that they do even nearly as good as they do, but that wouldn't really do it justice. I was trying to think who else seems comparable. Before looking at the similar artists, The Dismemberment Plan occurred to me. Seems fair enough, both do something with the post hardcore thing; post hardcore in the sense of what putting "post" before a genre ought to mean, a significant change but with roots. Compared to the lack of ambition in most bands with post hardcore label it seems to not do them justice either, though it does seem it's what post hardcore ought to signify at least, this and onwards. They're ahead of the game, music is lucky to have them.
