this is really an exquisite sound. if the subject matter is depressing, i can still find some beauty in there.

"It seems so long ago, Nancy was alone, A forty five beside her head, An open telephone. We told her she was beautiful, We told her she was free But none of us would meet her in The House of Mystery, The House of Mystery"

like a companion to nick cave's "christina the astonishing", except that one has lyrics about innocence with music/vocals suggesting sexuality/depravity while this one has lyrics about depravity and music suggesting innocence.

I FIND THAT TO BE AN EXTREMELY GLOOMY SONG. I HATE THE RHYTHM, THOUGH. THE IDEA OF HER BEING ALONE, ON THE OTHER HAND, KEEPS ME INTERESTED, I DON'T KNOW.

In the live concert at the Isle of Wight in 1970, Leonard closed his set with this song, and introduced it by saying: “I want to sing this song for Nancy. It was in 1961 she went into the bathroom and blew her head off with her brother’s shotgun. In those days there was not this kind of horizontal support and she was right where all of you are now, but there was no one else around to light their matches.”

"Nancy wore green stockings / and she slept with everyone." That just may be my favorite line, ever. Utterly Cohen.
