LCD Soundsystem est le projet solo du producteur James Murphy, co-fondateur du label dance-punk DFA Records. La musique de LCD Soundsystem peut être décrite comme un mélange de dance music et de post punk (le groupe a d’ailleurs repris Joy Division et Siouxsie and the Banshees).
Pendant les concerts, Murphy est accompagné de Tyler Pope (!!!, Out Hud) à la basse, Phil Mossman à la guitare et à la percussion, Nancy Whang au clavier et Pat Mahoney à la batterie.
LCD Soundsystem a attiré l’attention du public avec son premier single, « Losing My Edge ». Murphy a plus tard sorti un double album nommé LCD Soundsystem en février 2005. Le premier disque de l’album contient de la musique nouvelle et le second album contient des nouvelles versions de titres déjà sortis en single. Le titre d’ouverture «
Daft Punk Is Playing At My House » gagne rapidement la popularité du public et entre dans le Top 40 au Royaume Uni en mars 2005.
Le 8 décembre 2005, le groupe reçoit des nominations pour deux Grammy awards, catégorie musique électronique, pour leur album éponyme, et dans la catégorie « dance » pour « Daft Punk Is Playing At My House ».
