Summer in the Northland demands your attention. The sun stays up till 10 at night, and you can't help but brave mosquitos the size of chiuahauas to enjoy the heat and sunshine.....because you know it is a matter of days, hours, minutes, until Jack Frost comes knocking at your bedroom window. And there the old bastard was this morning. Autumn beckons and Minnesota follows.

I've been scattered and unfocused recently, in life and music. Stuck on Shuffle somewhere in the K-L section of the CD Library. Highlights:

Alison Krauss is an angel straight from Heaven, which I never realized was quite so close to Champaign, Illinois. I know it is in her Rounder contract , but its been interesting as well to try to discern a difference between what young Alison records solo, and that which the entirety of Alison Krauss & Union Station records. Then there is her production work, with the likes of early Nickel Creek. I may have to get my Mrs Alan Jackson's new album just to see how her producing is coming along. …

Brian Joseph: Smart new folk LA singer-songwriter. Great guy on a small stage. I imagine he'd be great on a bigger stage if given the chance.

Alfonzo Lonnie Johnson: Influential early 20th century Blues & Jazz guitarist, originally from New Orleans.

Kane's River: Bluegrass band out of the Gallatin Valley of Montana, just outside Yellowstone Park in the show of the Bridger Mountains. Idaho picker Ben Winship joined the lineup last couple years, too. As my icon presently implies, I'm a fisherman, and a big fan of Ben Winship & David Thompson's Fishing Music compilation (also John Lowell & Ben Winship. Good grass!

now I'm off to the county fair.

Soundtrack of My Life: Live

I don't have a laudry list of bands I've seen live. I don't see many bands live. Not many bands play live where I live, where I have lived, or where I imagine I'll live anytime soon.

Growing up up Fargo ways the fair brought in the regular hat acts. The first show I recall was theOak Ridge Boys at the lutheran college (I was 7 or 9 or something). Charlie Daniels was the closest thing to rock-n-roll I saw. After a couple shows to wet my musical wistle, I vividly recall Willie Nelson's show. He got up on stage, said "Hello". Then he played his guitar & sang. Then he played alot more. When he was done he said "I hope you enjoyed the show". He did what he came to do and didn't clutter it up with fluff. I wish I woulda listened, cause I spent alot of growing up years listening to clutter.
Soundtrack of high school: Stardust.

I went to college at Illinois-Urbana (Oskee-wa-wa!) It still kills me that Alison Krauss was attending the local community college & playing around town…

Rocky Mountain Grass

I dipped into the musical stream at home (boxes really at this point) and hooked some fine Rocky Mountain trout—Kane's River and Open Road, fine bluegrass from Montana and Colorado—to finish out January 06. Open Road is breaking up (tears of sadness) after a good run on Rounder. One member has opened up a honky tonk in LaPorte, Colorado, outside of Fort Collins, which in itself is an outstanding service to society.

Kane's River is out of the Gallatin Valley of Bozeman, Montana. If Montana’s not heaven I’m not sure I want to go. While other than the mountains it bears little resemblance to Appalachia, yet bluegrass is alive and well in Big Sky country. They make Gibson guitars in Bozeman. After Gibson pulled their mandolin manufacturing back to Nashville, many lutiers stayed and started up custom shops like Weber Mandolins. These folks (and the Yellowstone/ski area tourist-trade) attract some quality musicians. A friend of mine tech’d for Bill Monroe’s last show in Bozeman. Wish I could have been there for that.
