Дорогие друзья и все, кто читают эту заметку! Вот и стучится в двери предновогодняя суета, предстоят ещё сложнейшие 2 последние недели года. Чуть ранее я уже начал подводить итоги года. Скоро вы сможете лицезреть мой главный чарт уходящего года - итоговый топ-100 песен. А пока его участники делают свои последние рывки и падения предлагаю ознакомиться с ретро-топом этого года. Здесь и песни, открытые мной в этом году и подзабытые песни, которыми я заслушивался предыдущие годы, и те песни, что я открыл в прошлом году и по инерции слушал в этом. Ну и как говорит какой-нибудь мажор блондинке на заднем сидении машины: "Довольно болтовни, займёмся делом"

I have two albums of the week this week, Cat's Eyes, the new side-project from The Horrors frontman, Faris Badwan, and The Rentals - The Rentals Present: Resilience (A Benefit Album for the Relief Effort In Japan), another side-project, this time from Matt Sharp, former bass player for Weezer.

In the days after the biggest and best royal wedding in 30 years, I thought a love song would be in order, but not being a fan of the mushy slushy stuff, this was a bit of a task for me. One that stands out is The Best Person I Know, a 60s girl-group sounding track that is not only beautifully done, but sweet enough without being saccharine and therefore, most acceptable.

But first, the happy couple.

yesterday, i dj'd before and after the Richard Youngs, Ignatz, Edgar Wappenhalter shows. dont remember in what order i played them, but is the full list of all the tracks that were played. a rather mixed bag i think: old and new, 'popular' and obscure, minimal and full blown, absctract or melodic. i can recommend all these songs, and all the albums/eps that the tracks are on.

Been a quiet one, January. Did get Belle and Sebastian's Write About Love as a late Christmas present, and while nowhere near the dizzying heights of the early EPs or albums If You're Feeling Sinister or The Boy With The Arab Strap (but then, not a lot is) it is a solid album. That's the problem though, it seems like the last few B&S albums are, borrowing from one of their own tracks, a bit Meat and Potatoes these days.

With track names like Mexican Grand Prix, George Square Thatcher Death Party, How to Be a Werewolf and You're Lionel Richie there's a danger that the phrase "excellently titled" could be over-used when discussing the new Mogwaialbum, the excellently titled Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will. Fortunately, it's got far more going for it than some humourous song titles though. I'm loving how Mogwai have been continually evolving, and how every album has felt like a step beyond the previous one; progressing while not being a complete reinvention. …

Steve Hauschildt, one third of Emeralds, made an intricate mix for our Guest Mix series, accompanied by a full on essay on the concept behind it, so we’ll just let him do the talking:
“It is something of a study in both new and old musics, often synthesizer-centric, covering many types of media (compact disc, vinyl, film, video game, training video). Regionally it is mostly American, although some French, Japanese, and British tracks are included as well. Stylistically not ‘really’ bound, except by certain structural conventions across popular and rhythmic musics. Rather, it is biographical in a sense, many of the songs are more obscure tracks by well-known artists/public figures. The track by Madonna, for example is an unreleased demo track before her signing to Sire. The Innocent displays Trent Reznor’s keyboard work in a little-known AOR band before his time in such acts as Exotic Birds and Nine Inch Nails. The Mylène Farmer as well…

So., 14. Nov. – Beach House, Jack November

Zweimal hatte ich Beach House dieses Jahr bereits verpasst, und auch heute brauchte ich externe Motivation, um ins Gebäude 9 zu fahren. Wieso, weiß ich jetzt hinterher wirklich nicht mehr, denn die Amerikaner überzeugten restlos!

Der Abend begann allerdings mit Jack November, einer jungen Frau (Daniela Moos) aus Hessen, die lediglich mit einem indischen Harmonium (dieser cooleren Version eines Akkordeons) und ihrer leisen, sphärischen Stimme Lieder erzeugte, die wie die 2010er Version des Twin Peaks Soundtracks klangen. Die meisten Stücke bestanden nur aus zwei Harmoniumtönen und Danielas Stimme. Auf dem Papier klingt das schrecklich eintönig*, live hatte Jack November durchaus Charme. In der Mitte des kurzen Sets kam ein Mann dazu, der vor Jack November schon ein paar tief brummende Töne auf der Bühne erzeugt hatte. Wir hatten ihn für die Pre-Pre-Show gehalten, er gehörte aber offensichtlich dazu und erzeugte ein paar Hintergrundgeräusche. …
