John Petrucci est, d’après ses fans, actuellement sans doute possible, le meilleur guitariste, techniquement parlant. Il a commencé la guitare à l’âge de 12 ans, avec pour influence tout le rock progressif de l’époque et des groupes plus heavy comme Iron Maiden ou Metallica.
Il crée son premier groupe, Majesty, en 1985, avec Mike Portnoy et John Myung. Leur groupe s’est ensuite appelé Dream Theater en intégrant James Labrie et Kevin Moore.

En 2005, Petrucci a composé un album solo (Suspended Animation).
Il est a l’heure actuelle guitariste de Dream Theater depuis plus de 20 ans, groupe phare sur la scène Prog Metal.
