Né le 16 octobre 1977 à Bridgeport (Connecticut), John Clayton Mayer est un chanteur et compositeur pop américain. C’est à ses 13 ans qu’il apprend la guitare et s’intéresse pour la première fois à la pop. Pour information, c’est en écoutant une casette de Stevie Ray Vaughan, que lui a donné un voisin, qu’il a appris à jouer de la guitare et a découvert le blues. Après deux ans d’apprentissage, il se lance et joue dans des bars de blues. Sa musique est appréciée, et John Mayer est engagé pour jouer dans un groupe de lycéens appelé Villanova Junction, en compagnie de Joe Beleznay, Tim Procaccini et Rich Wolf.
Voulant être un expert de la gratte, il s’inscrit au Berklee College of Music dans le Massachusetts. Il a alors 19 ans. A force d’apprendre, il se rend compte que son plaisir tient plus dans le fait de composer et de jouer ses morceaux. Il choisit alors d’arrêter ses études et de déménager…direction Atlanta. Là-bas, il s’intègre dans plusieurs groupes, comme Maroon 5, Guster, Counting Crows, The Wallflowers et Teitur.
Durant ces collaborations, John Mayer a enregistré de nombreux titres, dont certains ont connu un franc succès, tels que, « Clarity », « Bigger Than My Body », « No Such Thing » et « Your Body Is a Wonderland ». De 1995 à 2004, l’artiste a sorti huit albums, dont le dernier en date est « As Is » (2004).

"karaoke studies" - Totally agree. I love John Mayer as a guitarist, but there's just nothing there. Very bleh album, but I think I'm always going to be disappointed; the first album I heard was Where the Light Is and the others don't even come close.

Battle Studies is a huge let down... Assassin is decent, and a few other songs have their moments, but as a whole it doesn't really feel like John was pushing himself. This album reminds me of Heavier Things, just not as good (although I previously viewed Heavier Things as his weakest album).

LOVE the new album! It's the only thing I listened to the whole week, over and over again. It get's better each and every time. It's got an awesome vibe. Top tracks for me are Perfectly Lonely & Edge Of Desire.

Alright my first listen was pretty disappointing. Assassin was an immediate favorite, and the only stand-out. Now I've listened to the album at least 10 times through and I really do like it. The tunes grow on you big time, and now that I think back, thats a bit of what it was like with Continuum. Perfectly Lonely and War of My Life are good songs, and I'll agree with anyone who says "Who Says" sucks, because it does. Half of My Heart is also one of my least favs. But keep listening and you'll start to love it. Its a great album, and my god ASSASSIN may be his best song to date.

Hmm, initially I was disappointed by Battle Studies but I chipped away because there were one or two songs I kept coming back to (Perfectly Lonely, Half of My Heart) and now I'm seeing a few others in a new light (Heartbreak Warfare, Assassin, War of My Life). Still my least favourite but not as bad as intial thoughts. Who Says is still a terrible single and I skip it. :p Sorry John.

i've already listened to Battle Studies three times and for me it's a bit of a disappointment. Pop album which doesn't really seem to bring anything new into Mayer's creativity.
