  • 40 Questions About Your Top 50

    3 déc. 2009, 0h01m par NH3Maser

Disclaimer: my top 50 don't really reflect my current taste in music all that well. I'm working on changing that.

    1. How did you get into 31?
In Flames. I was looking for a good metal instrumental, and someone recommended ÉcouterMan Made God.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
Ah, Cynic's Veil of Maya. This may be my favorite album opener of all time.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 29?
"Bow to the savior of the fearful and desperate / Shepherd of deception / Prophet of infection / Behold the Xenochrist!". Awesome outro. The Faceless were the ones who convinced me that Deathcore wasn't all shit.

    4. What is your favourite album by 49?
No contest, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). The first hip-hop album I ever liked.

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own?
Mastodon. All five of their full-lengths. I also bough the ATHF movie soundtrack just for Cut You Up With A Linoleum Knife.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50?
Demons and Wizards. Probably Fiddler On The Green.

    7. Is there a song by 4 that makes you sad?
I'm pretty sure that there's a Beatles song for every emotion. I'll go with Julia.

    8. What is your favorite song by 15?
Tough one, because The Doors have a lot of amazing tracks, but I'll say ÉcouterThe Unknown Soldier.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5?
Kalmah is another tough one. Doubtful About It All, maybe?

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
The Jimi Hendrix Experience, of course. Off the top of my head, ÉcouterAngel.

    11. What is your favorite album by 40?
Definitely Caught Somewhere in Time. Where Iron Maiden peaked in my opinion.

    12. What is your favorite song by 10?
Ensiferum. Has to be ÉcouterInto Battle. The guitar solo... rock.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 33?
Explosions in the Sky. Too many to count, mostly involving psychedelics.

    14. What is your favorite song by 37?
Radiohead. Surprisingly, I guess it's ÉcouterMeeting In The Aisle, a random instrumental B-side off of some EP.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
Fuck yeah Necrophagist. ÉcouterTo Breathe in a Casket always makes me glad that I'm not currently buried alive, I guess.

    16. How many times have you seen 24 live?
Lamb of God - just once, in LA. Not that great a show.

Death? The obvious answer, Chuck Schuldiner (R.I.P.).

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live?
    Nope, never seen Joe Satriani.

    21. What is a good memory involving 45?
Sir Mix-A-Lot? Well, this is embarrassing. The time the Pitt band played ÉcouterJump on It at halftime at some football game, maybe? (This is one of the artists covered in the above disclaimer, by the way.)

    22. What is your favorite song by 16?
Metallica. Easily The Call of Ktulu.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47?
Black Sabbath. Dunno, likely ÉcouterIron Man.

    24. What is your favorite album by 21?
Not much of a selection as far as Dethklok albums go. I liked Dethalbum II better than the first one.

    25. What is your favorite song by 18?
    Pixies. Hmm... I Bleed.

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 38?
Guns N' Roses. First I can remember is ÉcouterWelcome To The Jungle.

    27. What is your favorite lyric by 3?

    28. What is your favorite song by 2?
Sublime. A lot of great songs, but I'll go with ÉcouterBoss D.J..

Slayer. I think it was ÉcouterAngel of Death, which I still regard as their best song.

    30. What is your favorite song by 8?
Wow, this is a tough choice for Led Zeppelin. I have to say Nobody's Fault But Mine, but this is very very close.

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live?
I have no idea what OutKast is doing in this position. Never.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy?
Yep, nearly all of Tenacious D's songs will do the trick. ÉcouterDouble Team always cracks me up.

    33. What is your favorite album by 12?
    God Dethroned. Easily Bloody Blasphemy.

    34. What is the worst song by 46?
Where to start with Styx? I used to like ÉcouterMr. Roboto, but all it does now is raise my urge to kill.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34?
    Elvis. Hound Dog, I guess?

    36. What is your favorite album by 42?
Immortal Technique. Revolutionary Vol. 2 is amazing.

    37. How many times have you seen 39 live?
    Jay-Z, never.

    38. What is your favorite album by 36?
Also a pretty sparse selection for Gorillaz. Between the two, I'll say Demon Days.

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
The Who. This is unusual, but the first one I can remember is ÉcouterChristmas.

    40. What is your favorite album by 7?

Imagine smooth, subtle, seamless transitions from jazz influenced chord structures to riff rock set to a familiar contemporary rock feel with catchy sing song, powerpop, vocal hooks and melodies. Guitar: this is heavily Jazz influenced, with melodic and shred metal tidbits here and there when called for. To get me out of Jazz mode I have to use alternate tunings. "CrowfeatheR" on the guitar is a nuclear-jazz guitarist with a sonic chameleon and multiple personality disorder complex. Every section of every song must have its own sonic principal and style that suits the feel of the music. My favorite guitar sound is from a HALO guitar and an EMG pickup. My primary instrument in the past has been the electric Bass. My greatest influences growing up were John Taylor (Duran Duran), James Jamerson, Bootzilla (that's Bootsy Collins to you), Muzz Skillins (living Color), Doug Pinnick (Kings-X, Pound hound), Chris Squire (YES) and of course Geddy Lee (Rush). Although I have the technical ability for endless masturbatory riffing and blazing runs faster than any guitar player could ever do using a pick, using my "cross finger picking" technique, I chose not to include too much of that in my popular music. I have put most of that behind me and I am trying to loose my musical ego. I am more worried about how things sound other than playing stuff no one else can. My favorite Bass tone is my custom made Bass through a bright, tube preamp with new sparkling Curt Mangan light stainless strings, mmmm, warm, punchy and crunchy. My percussion tracks are a Combination of live drums and percussion and digitally sampled or electronic, drum programming. My favorite drummers are too many to list , but include Morgan Rose (Seven Dust), Danny Carey (TOOL), Sam Mcandless (COLD), Jerry Gaskill (Kings-X) and the creator of the modern drumming style, Neil Peart (Rush). I prefer the sound of Mahogany drum shells, ported bass drum heads, a hard beater and a beater patch.

  • Top 1000 Albums (1970-2009) - Part I (2000-2009)

    23 nov. 2009, 12h42m par Funkafonik

Alright, as we near the end of this first Y2K decade, it's time to take a look back at all the best Albums that have been released in the last 40 years.

I'll start off this extensive research with 2000, up until 2009. I'll then go back to 1980, all the way up to 1999, to then wrap things up with the 70s and before.

I'll be choosing my Top 25 Albums for each year; an ordered Top 10, and ~15 others worth mentioning. I'm also considering the live albums and EPs (~5), but they have their own section since songs on these have usually been released on official releases. The final result will be a Top 1000 for Official Albums, and Top ~250 for Live/EP albums.

These are general rankings of how I see them today, and based on my Last.FM songs playcounts (2005-now) put through the formula:

Total Sum of each Album's Song's (running time X playcount)
    DIVIDED BY
    Album's Total Running Time

Thanks to MediaMonkey and its amazing scripting abilities, that formula gives an Album's REAL playcount, taking into consideration every song's lenght & playcount in relation to the overall album's lenght and # of songs on it.
You'll see the result (# of times I've really listened to an album since 2005) besides each, along with my 10* Rating. (x/x)
Besides each Year, you get the Total of all Albums' Playcounts and the average of all Albums' Ratings. (x / %)

Note that I haven't necessarily discovered and enjoyed all these albums on their released years, some I discovered years later. So these are also based on how important (to me) some of these albums were at the time.

    (**) are the complete albums I was into at that time;
    (*) are albums that contained only a few song(s) I was into or listened to at that time;
and those without (*) are albums I discovered years later.

  • Gli ASSOLI, secondo alcune ragazze/i su Facebook.

    19 nov.

    PORCA PUTTANA!
    Buon ascolto.

  • Passing the Torch?

    31 oct. 2009, 8h01m par xjl

Dude. Porcupine Tree is dangerously close to surpassing Satch for my top artists spot.

There's little doubt that PT is my favorite band right now. But this seems significant since Joe Satriani has ALWAYS held the top spot for pretty much as long as I've had a last.fm account (Dream Theater was on top for a short time, I think). Satch was easily my favorite artist for quite a few years. I own all his LPs. I basically spent most of my undergrad years (2002-06) worshiping the guy's musicianship, his aptitude for the guitar, and the uniqueness of his songwriting. I don't go to many (read: any) live shows, but I have been to a Satch concert (December 26, 200.... when was the tsunami? 2004. Yeah, December 26, 2004 at the Fillmore in San Francisco.) I did miss out on a PT concert in 2006 due to work, and--lo and behold!--they were performing in The City (that's our colloquial name for San Francisco, townies) just last month, and I didn't even know about it. For shame.

Okay, so the point of the post would have to be this: Satch has always been on the top spot, and thanks to my borderline-anal tri-weekly album lists (I cram a bunch of album names on an index card, and this basically dictates what I allow myself to listen to for the next three weeks), there haven't been a lot of lead changes. Which sucks, because Pain of Salvation has been #4 forever, and I've come to the realization that I just don't like them that much (or, more accurately, they're hit-and-miss; I simply abhor listening to The Perfect Element, Part I, but Entropia kicks supreme ass). And now, and NOW... It's looking like PT is primed to break into the lead, as I feel I need to dive deeper into The Incident. A change of the guard, a passing of the torch, if you will.

By the way, I haven't quite decided what I think of The Incident. I've been able to enjoy individual tracks, but not so much the album as a whole just yet. I knew pretty much right away that it wouldn't match Fear of a Blank Planet (of course, what earthly thing does?), but I have a feeling it's a grower.

(One more thing that hardly needs mention but is so obvious that I feel compelled to give it anyway: comparing Porcupine Tree's new material with Joe Satriani's new material probably causes God to kill a kitten somewhere--there's that big of a discrepancy. Joe's new stuff is still good...but he needs to try something else.)

  • Autumn & Jazz in Kiev

    24 oct. 2009, 14h45m par ukrsamurai

Fri 16 Oct – Jazz in Kiev 2009

«Mike, could you please sign my ticket? – Yes, thank you for coming! ».
