Il fit ses premières armes en se produisant dans les bars et les clubs de sa ville, avant de signer un contrat chez le label XL Recordings. Il propose alors des morceaux très influencés par la pop et la soul des années 70.
En 2006, Le jeune homme enregistre son premier single, Second Minute Or Hour, suivi notamment d’un maxi baptisé Spit At Stars EP, en 2007. La même année, il revient dans les bacs avec son premier album intitulé sobrement Matinée.
