La formation death metal québécoise Gorguts, qui a su incorporer des éléments jazz fusion au cours des années à leur musique, a été créée par Luc Lemay (vocal), Sylvain Marcoux (guitare), Éric Giguere (basse) et Stéphane Provencher (batterie) en 1989. Le succès du groupe a été rapide avec sa signature avec Roadrunner Records, la compagnie avait été grandement impressionnée par leur démo « …And Then Comes Lividity » en 1990. C’est sous cette étiquette qu’ils ont mis sur le marché leur premier opus, « Considered Dead », en 1991, qui était du death metal technique. Il ne faut pas oublier qu’ils ont eu la chance d’avoir des invités très connus, comme le guitariste James Murphy de Death et le chanteur de Cannibal Corpse, Chris Barnes. Lemay a fait un retour en 1998 avec un nouvel alignement composé du guitariste Steeve Hurdle, du bassiste Steve Cloutier et du batteur Patrick Robert, en plus d’un nouveau contrat avec Olympic. La même année, Gorguts a pu mettre en vente leur nouvel album, « Obscura », qui proposait du death metal avec quelques éléments progressifs et d’avantgarde « From Wisdom To Hate » en 2001.
En 2002, le batteur Steve MacDonald s’est suicidé à la suite d’une sévère dépression. En 2003, Galy Records a mis en vente la compilation « …And Then Comes Lividity / Demo Anthology », qui contient une grande quantité de démos. Gorguts a été officiellement séparé en 2004. Gorguts a sans aucun doute marqué la scène québécoise. Des anciens membres du groupe ont formé Negativa.

Still don't know what to think of Obscura... It is so weird and fucked up... I'm not really sure if I like it or not. The other albums are great, though. Especially "The Erosion Of Sanity".

DsO is amazing fool they're the only reason I'm even the slightest bit interested in BM in the first place. and the only reason I liked them cause they reminded me of my beloved Gorguts, So really it was Gorguts that dug BM out of the grave for me! hahahaha YES!
