I've listened before to some gregorian stuff... and I've been listening all morning to choral, 4-voices, early music, motets and stuff like that. Very enjoyable, from Guillaume Dufay to Josquin des Prez, Thomas Tallis, Guillaume de Machaut, William Byrd...

...BUT..

I haven't experienced anything similar to what those two tracks make me feel. They're darker, they have SOMETHING else... and I want to find more music that could make me feel it.

As a music fan, and as a reluctant but nonetheless devout christian, one thing that annoys me intensely is the sheer crappiness of the christian music scene. For a religion that, among other things, holds values like Integrity, Honesty, and possesses a sort of loony be-not-of-this-world outlook, (or it's meant to, anyway) it's hard to find a band within this particular niche of music that isn't churning out the most bland, pointless, designed-to-sell-records-to-soccer-mums music there is.

Whether it's the terrible pop rock of Newsboys, the awful shopping mall music of Sixpence None The Richer, or the almost blasphemous attempt at 'RAWK' that's Third Day or Audio Adrenaline, Christian music is completely devoid of anything resembling integrity, excitement, and is possibly blander then Matchbox 20, which is quite an impressive feat in itself. And don't get me started on those indie bands who have some sort of christian outlook. Chances are Sufjan Stevens and Pedro the Lion would sound…

One of the useful things about Last.fm is tag radio, but it's only as good as the tags users put on artists, albums and tracks. classical tag radio, and classical music in general, suffers from poor tagging (not to mention that horrible 'Music Box' stuff — ban, ban, ban). Clearly, the majority of listeners to classical music do not tag the music they listen to. Of course, systematic, good tagging only works if enough users do it, and if they follow the same system. So, here's a suggestion for anyone who comes across this little note. Classical music is usually defined by period, so we could use the following traditional method:

renaissance (1400-1600) — John Dunstable, Josquin des Prez, John Taverner, Thomas Tallis, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Orlande de Lassus, William Byrd and Giovanni Gabrielibaroque (1600-1760) — Giovanni Gabrieli, Claudio Monteverdi, Gregorio Allegri, Jean-Baptiste Lully, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Dietrich Buxtehude, Johann Pachelbel, Henry Purcell, Alessandro Scarlatti…
