For me, Gescom appealed to me as the place where I got to hear Autechre cut loose. Usually they concerned themselves with making another extremely relevant and critically acclaimed album in their day job. Gescom allowed them to explore more of their impulses, so you could get a better idea of what they’d do if nobody was watching.


This particular release ends up being probably one of my more beloved Gescom releases. Containing some excellent melodies and that beautiful smell of early 90s IDM, before IDM became extremely stuffy, it works. Only four tracks long, it manages to keep out all filler, leaving only the ‘best of’.


“Dan One” sounds a lot like “Djarum” from their Anti EP of the same year. No worries, it is fine to have two different variations on the same theme. This take has a bit more on it compared to the sparser Autechre version. “Five” has one of those builds on it. You know, one of those fantastic layers upon layer. …

Great news! Sunken Foal has new music for your listening pleasure – he’s released a new 6-track EP titled “Mother of God” and if it’s half as good as his Fallen arches release on Planet Mu a while back, it’s going to be awesome.

This man writes some incredible electronic music. Well worth checking out.

Two years after their well-received Planet Mu album, Sunken Foal return with six tracks for Acroplane. Mother Of God finds their sound at a juncture of Alex Smoke-like, Autechre-referencing electronica in Low Mountain Light Socket and the mercury fuming synths and quickstep syncopations of Gift Knee Pads, while Colloidal Glass is a glassy IDM configuration and Platforms like some swaggering Gescom beat. Ace.

These guys have pretty much just started their project, but it is already (rightfully) attracting a great deal of attention for its dark nature. Some have compared it (favorably) to Muslimgauze, but really it is a different beast altogether. For one, they seem to have a greater handle on quality control thus far, whereas Muslimgauze sort of released everything he ever recorded. Plus, there’s nothing overtly political about the proceedings. Sure, they do tend to focus on witchcraft, but that’s about as much as they muse.

The music shows considerable knowledge in terms of pace, previous electronic movements, and creating a mood. They’re still dedicated followers of the “less is more” aesthetic, and a few times remind me of early Gescom (back when they were more ambient-based in the early 90s). At the end of the first track, they strip away all percussion to leave only a lingering drone.

1. Autechre
Two nerdy white boys from England making non-rhythmic instrumental "music" on extremely complex and expensive equipment, then they have the gall to mention hip-hop in an interview. Yeah, you're so totally hip-hop.

Another thing: Quaristice sucks. It used to be that your music was confusing because it was so abstract and otherworldly. Quaristice is confusing because I can't tell whether I loathe it or love it.

It's totally obvious that you're using Machinedrums exclusively now, by the way. Please go back to your old way of making music--EXPERIMENTING! If your next album is another Quaristice-type affair, then you're pretty much dead to me. Just being honest.

No matter how hard they try, they're never going to make anything as good as The Eyes of Stanley Pain ever again. But with FiXeR it seems like they're trying to, and so they're probably never going to make anything as good as III ever again either.
