Affecting, and nearly sympathetic (for once). A condescending journalist searches for dignity in the lives of women in a man's world. When there's none to be found, he makes shit up--to wit: that perceived virtue is the consolation prize for society's victims, that women's moral superiority is nourished by their lack of status and power, and that they can achieve beatification by asking for nothing more than men deign to give them. The song's arrangement is as spare and hollow as the lives our journalist friend finds women leading. The bass and drums are exceptionally stuttery, as if the entire song's on edge. A melodica takes the place of guitar, and the instrumental change is significant. Where Gill's guitar is angry and aggressive, the melodica is plaintive and resigned, giving the song a melancholy air. King's voice even takes on some of the resigned qualities of the melodica: the traces of emotion that occasionally pop up in his sing-speak are nowhere to be found.
