Frank Vincent Zappa (21 décembre 1940 - 4 décembre 1993) était un musicien de rock, compositeur, réalisateur et satiriste américain. Pendant sa carrière musicale de 33 ans, Zappa a prouvé qu’il était l’un des musiciens-compositeurs les plus prolifiques de son ère, en réalisant plus de 60 albums, la plupart d’entre eux constitués de compositions originales. Il était aussi un guitariste (électrique) renommé et un ingénieur-producteur doué, qui a réalisé lui-même presque tous les enregistrements qu’il a faits après ses débuts en 1966.

Son travail a exploré tous les styles musicaux contemporains (notamment l’avant-garde, le Rock, le doo-wop, le jazz, le jazz fusion, le reggae, le ska, la musique électronique, la musique contemporaine, le blues, le funk, la musique concrète, le hard rock, le big band, le rock progressif, la pop, le proto-rap et la world music), et était souvent reconnu pour son mélange d’art, d’opéra rock, d’absurde, d’humour scatologique, et pour son hilarante satire sociale. Il était aussi connu comme un révélateur de talent, et ses différents groupes ont compté parmi leurs membres d’illustres musiciens comme Adrian Belew, Lowell George, Jean-Luc Ponty, Aynsley Dunbar, Ruth Underwood, George Duke, Vinnie Colaiuta, Mike Keneally, Terry Bozzio, Tommy Mars, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Jeff Berlin et Steve Vai.

    V I've never heard anyone underrating Zappa as a guitarist. O.O Especially when folks tend to know he might've improvised a solo in a gig, then use it and a few others in an album a few years later. :P He was a heck of a guitarist, and not only that, his guitar playing (and overally even composing) was at times like peacing together a puzzle/montage. :) Otherwise you nailed it pretty well. :D

    Well, to me, Frank wasn't a singer. In Frank's own words, he was a commentator, as most of his material and lyrical content focused on social satire and other absurdity, which needed to be spoken, rather than sung. He was also way underrated as a guitar player, but it was only because his other talents overshadowed this particular area of expertise.

    I don't like Frank's singing. He's a funny story-teller (Muffin Man for example), but his vocals aren't as brilliant as his compositions and his fellow musicians. Luckily he didn't sing so much.
