• WELGR 01: Galego / Fanny + Alexander

This is the first issue of WELGR The Weekly Endangered languages group recommendation. My hope is that it will become better issue after issue with everybody's help.

    THE LANGUAGE: GALEGO

Galego (Galician in English), is a language of the Western Ibero-Romance branch, spoken in Galicia

Galician and Portuguese were, in medieval times, a single language (...)

The relationship involving Galician and Portuguese can be compared with that between Flemish and Dutch, Macedonian and Bulgarian, Occitan and Catalan, Italian and Corsican, Romanian and Moldovan or English and Lowland Scots. (...)

The official institution regulating Galician language is Instituto da Lingua Galega (ILG). It claims that modern Galician must be considered an independent Romance language (...)

There is also an unofficial and minoritary institution Associaçom Galega da Língua (AGAL), according to which differences between Galician and Portuguese languages are not enough to consider them separate languages (...)

So, WELGR opens fire with a debate since the first issue: Does a language define a natural community above political borders? And how much of politics does the border between language and dialect have?

    THE ARTIST: FANNY + ALEXANDER

This band named after Ingmar Bergman's film is interesting in many senses besides singing in their own language and adding a drop of colour to this English-chrome music market.

Their music can be described as Pop, electro Pop, maybe indietronica, but they don't forget their roots, and traditional Galician music samples are tastefully added to the programmed layers of sound.

Portuguese exported the word "Saudade" (solitude), Galicians exported "Morriña" (homesickness). Does a language define a culture and the individuals personality? vice versa? Whatever the answer, Fanny + Alexander fit in the Galician cliché of Melancholy.

    CREATIVE COMMONS

Fanny + Alexander have chosen to join a growing collective of artists that distribute their work with a Creative Commons license.

A Regueifa Plataforma is a very active Netlabel publishing, under a Creative Commons licence, Galician creators' works "whatever you create (music, video creation, photography, poetry, painting, design,...) as long as it can be digitalized"
