Explosions in the Sky est un groupe de post-rock américain composé de Munaf Rayani (guitare), Mark Smith (guitare), Michael James (basse) et Christopher Hrasky (batterie). Le groupe est sur le label Temporary Residence Limited qui les a signé après avoir seulement écouté la moitié de leur démo. Celle-ci leur avait été envoyée par un proche du groupe, si bien que ses membres ne l’ont su que lorsqu’ils ont été contactés par le label.
Explosions in the Sky se forme à Austin, Texas en 1999. Ils acquièrent rapidement une bonne réputation comme d’ailleurs d’autres groupes locaux comme Lift to Experience.
Après la sortie de leur premier album édité Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Die / Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Live Forever le groupe obtient l’attention des médias car l’album contient l’image d’un avion avec comme légende:”cet avion s’écrasera demain”.
De nombreuses sources prétendent que l’album est sorti le 4 septembre 2001, une semaine avant le 11 septembre 2001, mais une interview pour Skyscraper Magazine à l’été 2004 révèle que l’album est sorti réellement en août 2001. Les membres du groupe expliquent d’ailleurs qu’ils avaient eu l’idée plus d’un an avant l’attentat du World Trade Center.
Leur deuxième album « The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place » fait son apparition en 2003. Celui-ci devient rapidement l’album clef du groupe grâce à des pièces comme « First Breath After Coma » ainsi que « Your Hand In Mine ».
En 2004, le groupe est approché pour créé la trame sonore de la série télé « Friday Night Lights ». (Ils n’ont cependant pas été retenus pour la Bande originale du film)
