Egg were an English progressive rock band formed in January 1969. The founding members of the group were Dave Stewart who played organ (not to be confused with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics), Mont Campbell on bass and vocals and drummer Clive Brooks. The band emerged from an earlier quartet formed whilst at City of London Boys School called Uriel with guitarist Steve Hillage. After Hillage left the band in August 1968, the other three continued as a trio. Having signed a deal with the Middle Earth club’s management branch, they were advised to change their name to Egg, allegedly because Uriel « sounded too much like ‘urinal’ ». In mid 1969 the band signed a deal with Decca’s ‘progressive’ sublabel Deram and released their debut album in March 1970 on their shortlived Nova series.
While not a commercial success, it was received well enough for the label to finance the recording of a follow-up, but when the time came to release it, they got cold feet and it was all but shelved, until producer Neil Slaven’s lobbying finally resulted in The Polite Force coming out in February 1971. Now signed to The Groundhogs’ management company, Egg finished the year with an increased touring schedule, but in spite of accumulating enough material for a third album, were unable to secure another record deal, and called it a day in July 1972.
In 1974, Stewart, now signed with Virgin as a member of Hatfield and the North, got a deal for Egg to record their unreleased material, which resulted in the farewell album The Civil Surface.

Little rock history: In 1969 the so-called "progressive" or "undrerground" rock boom was taking hold of Britain's long haired youth. Short "pop" material was out and long complex compositions, drawing their inspiration from jazz, blues, psychedelia and classical music, was the order of the day. Album sales had overtaken single sales considerably and, anxious to capitalize on this new trend, the major UK record companies established imprints (inspired by the success of independents such as Island and Elektra) with an "underground" credibility and scouted for acts to sign. EMI Records established Harvest with great success whilst Phillips developed Vertigo and Decca label as companion to their Deram imprint. >> Of the initial releases and the Nova label, few had the quality or enjoyed the subsequent status of the debut album by a young trio from London who had assumed the identity of EGG. The trio who comprised the group had evolved from a band formed at the city of London School, Uriel.

mweave5707 because even thought they all share a significant number of members, they don't really sound similar at all.

The Polite Force has to be their best. The Civil Surface is good, but like Dirk Campbell says, the mixing is terrible on that album.

I don't know why it took me so long to really get into this band (Prog band), they are so amazing. Polite Force is currently rocking my socks, which are currently in the other room.
