    1 déc. 2009, 19h03m par InsomniacAttack

Slipknot - Headliners. 11/12/08 - What can I say? Absolutely amazing. Best songs: Surfacing,Spit It Out, Dead Memories.

    Children of Bodom
    Machine Head

Mindless Self-Indulgence -Headliners. 28/1/09 - Ehh, I was only really there for In Case of Fire and Black Tide. Still, MSI's best song had to be Faggot. AND there was a wall of hugs.

    Dir en grey
    Black Tide
    In Case of Fire

Attack! Attack! -Headliners. 21/2/09 - Great, once again, they never disappoint. Best song this time round was This is a Test.

    Tonight Is Goodbye
    Said Mike
    Out of Sight

Fei Comodo - Headliners. 26/2/09 - Brilliant! I really want to see these live again. Best track was This One's For Us.

    Bury Tomorrow
    Kaikoura

Electric Six - Headliners. 7/3/09 - Fun gig. A few dickheads there though, but what can you do eh? Best song has to go to Improper Dancing.

    Tragedy
    Finding Atlantis

Lights - Headliners. 14/4/09 - I only watched a little part of her set, and I'd never listened to her stuff before. I might have to, because I've heard it's good.

    In This Moment
    VersaEmerge
    Whole Wheat Bread

Madina Lake - Headliners. 2/5/09 - Amazing, almost tops off Slipknot. Best track was either True Love or Me vs. The World.

    Yashin
    The Audition
    Flood of Red

The Blackout - Headliners. 27/5/09 - Great! Silverstein were one of the first bands I really got into aswell, and Hollywood Undead were just pure awesome. Best track ÉcouterI'm A Riot? You're A Fucking Riot!

    The Urgency
    Hollywood Undead
    Silverstein

Saving Aimee - Headliners. 7/6/09 - Haha, this gig was alright. The best song hands down was Small Talk. So good, they played it twice.

    The Mission District
    Twenty Twenty

Twenty Twenty - Headliners. 10/9/09 - This was fun. (: Best track was Forever, me and a few mates went kinda crazy.

    The Gap Year Riot
    The Broadcast

The Used - Headliners. 16/9/09 - I only really went to this for We Are The Ocean (their best track was Nothing Good Has Happened Yet even though a friend of mine fucked his ankle up) to be quite honest, but The Used but on a good show. Best Used track: Empty with You.

    We Are The Ocean
    Hexes

Go:Audio - Headliners. 5/10/09 (best song: Brake! Brake!)

Attack! Attack! - Best band of the night. Their best song was Too Bad Son.
    Saving Aimee
    Twenty Twenty

Dream Theater - Headliners. 9/10/09 - WOW. They put on an absolutely amazing show. Best gig I've ever been to. Best songs: ALL OF THEM!

Opeth - Opeth were brilliant too, their best song: ÉcouterApril Ethereal
    Bigelf
    Unexpect

Papa Roach - Headliners. 13/10/09 - Papa Roach exceeded all of my expectations, they were just great. Good atmosphere and they sounded pretty much flawless.

    Madina Lake
    Heaven's Basement

Enter Shikari - Headliners. 20/10/09 - Amazing gig, absolutely packed (sold-out) and an awesome set list to top it off. It's hard to choose the best song for me, so I'm going to go with ÉcouterMothership, ÉcouterGap in the Fence, ÉcouterZzzonked, and last but not least: the 15-minute version of ÉcouterSorry, You're Not A Winner. Being a big fan of Shikari, it was a blast seeing them live for the first time, and I think it's absolutely awesome how they treat the crowd like a 5th member of the band. Really good gig!

The Devil Wears Prada - A sidenote: TDWP are shit.
    True Tiger

Fightstar - Headliners. 26/10/09 - Brilliant band, shit crowd is what I have to say about this gig. Fightstar were literally pitch perfect and the set was brilliant. I especially loved ÉcouterPaint Your Target and Mercury Summer.

    Saving Aimee
    Young Guns
    Prego

Rise Against - Headliners. 18/11/09 - Absolutely amazing, they built up the night's atmosphere so well with extended build-ups and even a piano intro to - the first song I ever heard by them - Dancing for Rain. Best songs were: ÉcouterDancing For Rain, Swing Live Away, ÉcouterDrones.

    Thursday
    Poison the Well

Bring Me the Horizon - Headliners. 20/11/09 - I didn't really enjoy BMTH that much really, although Braile (For Stevie Wonder's Eyes Only) was a pretty good song.

    A Day to Remember
August Burns Red - Loved August Burns Red, caught Matt Grainer's drumstick! They were great and the frontman is a really awesome guy to talk to. ÉcouterComposure I loved, but the set was pretty much perfect, in my opinion. I was getting a lot of weird looks for shouting the words back at him, but who cares? I wanna see them on a headline at Newcastle SO BADLY. (:

Yashin - Headliners. 21/11/09 - Best song was The First Rule Of Fight Club. They also got the old vocalist on stage for the end of Dirty Slut. Only complaint was that I seemed to be getting punched by hardcore dancers a lot. Oh, and they didn't play ÉcouterSo We're Named After Saints.

    Noise Explosion
    This Is Divine
    This Way Up

The Mission District - Headliners. 24/11/09 - Best song was the Just Dance cover. ;p

    The New Cities
    The Broadcast
    This Never Fails

Killswitch Engage - Headliners, Taste of Chaos 2009. 30/11/09 - Killswitch were great, Howard was funny haha - "Who do you think I am? A black guy in a metal band? Oh...right..." Best song they did, for me, was ÉcouterMy Last Serenade.

In Flames - These were amazing too, and they did a signing before the show, which I got tickets for. :D The best song, though, was ÉcouterPinball Map
    Every Time I Die
Maylene and the Sons of Disaster.

It's not as big as some people's lists (I am aware it is not that impressive, it's just something I'm putting together to keep track of the bands I've seen).

    So basically, I've seen:

    Dropkick Murphys

Imagine smooth, subtle, seamless transitions from jazz influenced chord structures to riff rock set to a familiar contemporary rock feel with catchy sing song, powerpop, vocal hooks and melodies. Guitar: this is heavily Jazz influenced, with melodic and shred metal tidbits here and there when called for. To get me out of Jazz mode I have to use alternate tunings. "CrowfeatheR" on the guitar is a nuclear-jazz guitarist with a sonic chameleon and multiple personality disorder complex. Every section of every song must have its own sonic principal and style that suits the feel of the music. My favorite guitar sound is from a HALO guitar and an EMG pickup. My primary instrument in the past has been the electric Bass. My greatest influences growing up were John Taylor (Duran Duran), James Jamerson, Bootzilla (that's Bootsy Collins to you), Muzz Skillins (living Color), Doug Pinnick (Kings-X, Pound hound), Chris Squire (YES) and of course Geddy Lee (Rush). Although I have the technical ability for endless masturbatory riffing and blazing runs faster than any guitar player could ever do using a pick, using my "cross finger picking" technique, I chose not to include too much of that in my popular music. I have put most of that behind me and I am trying to loose my musical ego. I am more worried about how things sound other than playing stuff no one else can. My favorite Bass tone is my custom made Bass through a bright, tube preamp with new sparkling Curt Mangan light stainless strings, mmmm, warm, punchy and crunchy. My percussion tracks are a Combination of live drums and percussion and digitally sampled or electronic, drum programming. My favorite drummers are too many to list , but include Morgan Rose (Seven Dust), Danny Carey (TOOL), Sam Mcandless (COLD), Jerry Gaskill (Kings-X) and the creator of the modern drumming style, Neil Peart (Rush). I prefer the sound of Mahogany drum shells, ported bass drum heads, a hard beater and a beater patch.

  • Top 10 at the End of 2009

    29 nov. 2009, 16h08m par leodegraf

    1. Rush
    Rank in 2007: 1 (unchanged)
First Song: ÉcouterWorking Man. Must have heard this on FM radio in Toronto circa 1975.
First Love: ÉcouterIn the End. My first entry into Rush was the just released All The World's A Stage album. "In the End" was my first favourite.
Current Favorite: Armor and Sword. From 2007's Snakes & Arrows, the guys show that they're still rocking and writing great music after 30+ years in the business.
    Trend: Still my favourite band.

    2. Porcupine Tree
    Rank in 2007: 2 (unchanged)
First Song: Blackest Eyes Saw that these guys opened for Yes. Bought In Absentia and was hooked.
First Love: Trains The best track on In Absentia, IMHO.
Current Favorite: Time Flies from The Incident.
Trend: A return to form with The Incident. Awesome concert as well!

    3. Dream Theater
    Rank in 2007: 3 (unchanged)
First Song: As I Am Blew me away.
    First Love: As I Am
Current Favorite: The Count of Tuscany off of the new album is great.

    Rank in 2007: 2 (up 1)
First Song: ÉcouterLittle Bones On Much Music when it came out.
First Love: ÉcouterLittle Bones Was the official party tune of that summer.
Current Favorite: It's a Good Life If You Don't Weaken Not the typical Hip song; great guitar work.
Trend: I finally purchased World Container. It's OK, but like Rush, I'll continue to support them for a long time.

    5. The Tea Party
    Rank in 2005: 4 (down 1)
First Song: The River Again on Much Music.
First Love: The River Sounded like nothing else at the time.
Current Favorite: Halcyon Days Probably the best mix of East and West rock.
Trend: Unfortunately, TP has disbanded so without new music, I expect them to slip down the charts over time. Great band though.

    6. Genesis
    Rank in 2007: 6(unchanged)
First Song: ÉcouterDance on a Volcano In someone's basement circa 1976.
First Love: Follow You, Follow Me On FM radio

First Song: ÉcouterRoundabout Again, FM radio.
First Love: ÉcouterClose to the Edge It's a toss-up between this and...
Current Favorite: ÉcouterAnd You and I
Trend: Kind of surprised that they have moved up in two years since I have not purchased any music of theirs in some time.

    8. U2
    Rank in 2007: 10 (up 2)
First Song: ÉcouterGloria On campus radio circa 1981.
First Love: Where The Streets Have No Name I obsessed over this album while living in London, UK in 1986-1989.
Current Favorite: ÉcouterMagnificent Good tune from their newest album.
Trend: Again solidly in the Top 10 and rising.

    9. Coheed and Cambria
    Rank in 2007: 7 (down 2)
First Song: ÉcouterThe Crowing Heard this on a flight home from Tokyo on American Airlines of all places.
First Love: ÉcouterThe Crowing Again, C&C sounded like nothing else at the time.
Current Favorite: ÉcouterWelcome Home The new album rocks.
Trend: Still like their stuff a lot, however #4 in 2006 was probably just a timing thing.

    10. Sarah McLachlan
    Rank in 2007: - (-)
First Song: ÉcouterVox Heard this one on CBC radio back when it was first released.
First Love: ÉcouterVox I had a sense that she would be good.

  • I have a dream

    29 nov. 2009, 3h22m par The_Night_Head

I have a dream that one day metal elitists will take their heads out their arses, and realise taste is purely subjective, such that "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all genres are created equal."

I have a dream that one day on the grim frostbitten hills of Norway, the black metalheads and the gangsta rappers will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even Gothenburg, a place sweltering with shitty melodeath, and rife with generic sellouts, will be transformed into an oasis of progressive soul nurturing music.

I have a dream where bands will not be judged by how 'catchy their riffs are' but by how well they accomplish what they set out to do.

    28 nov. 2009, 19h46m par kurashu

Why is the common conception of technical and progressive metal & rock is one with Malmsteen running his hand all up, down, left and right on a fretboard? Yeah, it's impressive but it's not particularly good. Or bands like The Human Abstract and Dream Theater are hailed as the saviors from bland, untalented music when I doubt that they every played a real song in their careers? And since when was August Burns Red technical in any sense of the word -- at least Meshuggah puts on airs, not that they are any better but at least their songs aren't one long break down after another, I think ABR uses multiple breakdowns but I'm not sure.

Meanwhile, bands like Gorguts, Demilich, Anata and Ulcerate are derided as noise? One of the guys I work with actually told me that DragonForce could outplay Gorguts and that Anata was simple trash.

I'm just so very confused. I can understand the lesser appeal of a band like Gorguts or Deathspell Omega, but to go so far as to call them garbage and compare them to Dragonforce? Really? Really?

  • Top 1000 Albums (1970-2009) - Part I (2000-2009)

    23 nov. 2009, 12h42m par Funkafonik

Alright, as we near the end of this first Y2K decade, it's time to take a look back at all the best Albums that have been released in the last 40 years.

I'll start off this extensive research with 2000, up until 2009. I'll then go back to 1980, all the way up to 1999, to then wrap things up with the 70s and before.

I'll be choosing my Top 25 Albums for each year; an ordered Top 10, and ~15 others worth mentioning. I'm also considering the live albums and EPs (~5), but they have their own section since songs on these have usually already been released before. The final result will be a Top 1000 for Official Albums, and Top ~250 for Live/EP albums.

These are general rankings of how I see them today, and based on my Last.FM songs playcounts (2005-now) put through the formula:

Total Sum of each Album's Song's (running time X playcount)
    DIVIDED BY
    Album's Total Running Time

Thanks to MediaMonkey and its amazing scripting abilities, that formula gives an Album's REAL playcount, taking into consideration every song's lenght & playcount in relation to the overall album's lenght and # of songs on it.
You'll see the result (# of times I've really listened to an album since 2005) besides each, along with my 10* Rating. (x/x)
Besides each Year, you get the Total of all Albums' Playcounts and the average of all Albums' Ratings. (x / %)

Note that I haven't necessarily discovered and enjoyed all these albums on their released years, some I discovered years later. So these are also based on how important (to me) some of these albums were at the time.

    (**) are the complete albums I was into at that time;
    (*) are albums that contained only a few song(s) I was into or listened to at that time;
and those without (*) are albums I discovered years later.
