Jhaidinszaev Probably just a true American or, perhaps, British like you could think about draining precious american body fluids while most musicians of Leningrad Orchestra were dead of cold and starvation. By the way, we called it Soviet Citizens and Capitalistic Countries of the West.

The Leningrad Symphony was one of Shostakovich's only pieces received as well in the East as in the West. To the Soviets it was a powerful statement of heroic resolve in the face of Nazi aggression, whereas to the Americans it was a powerful statement of heroic resolve in the face of Nazi aggression that was probably also a secret critique of the godless communists and their plans to drain precious american bodily fluids.

@qixonnaute that would completely ruin all the secret anti-soviet messages he worked into his music! did you know that if you play the fifth symphony backwards you can clearly hear the words "capitalism is great and stalin has a tiny dick"? i read it in Testimony or something

I agree completely with what you said, KoechlinFan. There remains in his work a great emotion and it is often melodious. He manages to introduce dissonance in an otherwise melodic piece effortlessly.

One of the most brilliant composers of the 20th Century in my estimate. His symphonies and string quartets continue to get recorded and are, in my mind, major compositions, but I think he wrote a lot of great music outside of these cycles like the ballets "The Golden Age" and "The Bolt," all of the concerti, the film scores, especially "Macbeth" and "Hamlet," the piano trios, the operas, especially "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District," the "Piano Quartet," among other works. The reason why Shostakovich remains popular today is that he proved that music using tonality was still a viable form of expression even after all of the experimentation that was going on around him. Of course, the Soviet regime pushed him into writing more "acceptable" works, but there's something deeply profound in his music that gives the music more of a humanizing quality. He did stretch tonality very far, but he always remained a traditionalist at heart and he wasn't afraid to write a memorable melody.
