Dmitri Dmitrievitch Chostakovitch ou Shostakovich, né le 25 septembre 1906 à Saint-Pétersbourg en Russie et décédé le 9 août 1975 à Moscou en URSS, était un compositeur russe de la période soviétique.

Profondément marquée par une époque d’airain, la musique de Chostakovitch se voulait d’abord avant-gardiste. Une première période de création a abouti à des œuvres au style recherché et original, comme sa Première Symphonie ou sa Première Sonate pour piano. Suite à la composition de ces œuvres majeures au succès presque immédiat, il vécut une période moins productive. Les œuvres alors écrites sont actuellement moins connues (Symphonies n° 2 et n° 3).

Sarcastique, grinçant, ou au contraire d’une limpidité et d’un classicisme tout ironique (ses œuvres de « réalisme soviétique » semblent être écrites d’une autre main), il se démarque nettement de ses contemporains par un ton qui ne pouvait que déplaire à la toute puissante propagande stalinienne.

Il aura composé 15 symphonies, 15 quatuors à corde, 2 concertos pour violon, 2 pour violoncelle, et 2 pour piano. Il s’intéressa également à la musique scénique et à la musique de film.
