Disco Inferno était un groupe formé dans l’Essex à la fin des années 80 par Ian Crause (guitare & chant), Paul Wilmott (basse), Rob Whatley (batterie) et Daniel Gish (claviers).

Après le départ de Gish, qui devait rejoindre plus tard Bark Psychosis, le trio restant enregistra le single ‘Entertainment’ avec le producteur Charlie McIntosh. Leur premier album, « Open Doors, Closed Windows », est sorti en 1991 sur le label Che et a reçu un bon accueil de la part des critiques, même si la plupart ont constaté la grande influence des groupes post-punk de la fin des années 1970… , notamment Joy Division et Wire ( d’ailleurs, le manager de Disco Inferno, Michael Collins, avait travaillé avec Wire dans les années 70). Les titres d’ « Entertainment », « Open Doors, Closed Windows » et le maxi « Science » devaient plus tard être collectés et édités dans l’album In Debt. En 1992, le groupe sortira « Summer’s Last Sound », reconnu comme étant le premier d’une série de maxis où le groupe augmentera progressivement son utilisation des samples. L’utilisation atypique du sampling, combinée aux instruments traditionnels (la basse de Wilmott en particulier) continuera dans les maxis « A Rock To Cling To » et « The Last Dance », et atteindra son paroxysme dans l’album « D.I Go Pop ».

    Disco Inferno...The name isn't any help when describing the sound of the group. The early stuff wasn't anything like disco or an inferno, unless it's the 'Death Disco' of Joy Division or P.I.L., that's as close to disco they got...A bit closer later on, well the used samplers :-P but they were definitely Post-Rock at this time, Using their rock instruments in non-rock ways...So Disco Inferno crappy name, fantastic group...Maybe they could've been called Post-Rock Inferno. Lol.
