An Open Letter To NYC
10 mai 2006, 8h20m par mir83nj
Ok, so this Beastie Boys song is pretty much the definition of awesome. To start with, it has the sample of
Sonic Reducer, but the real gem is the lyrics...it's pretty much just an homage to New York (with an overwhelming sense of post-9/11 pride), and it reads like a love letter...it's impossible for me to listen to this song and not get chills.
The Beasties are probably most famous for their samples, and the best part about this track is that the samples are all New York related. First and most obvious is the Dead Boys, who were one of maybe the first 5 or 6 punk bands ever, and were staples at Max's Kansas City and CBGBs in the 70s. The opening line "Listen all you New Yorkers" is from a Robert Goulet song, "New York's My Home," and one of the last samples is legendary Queens MC Nas saying "New York."
I must admit, this song might not be as powerful to someone not familiar with NYC, but at the very least you should be rocking out to the Dead Boys sample. Word.

It's Gonna Be A Long Night, and The Doors - Break on Through, as well as Sonic Reducer on Thug 2.The Eclectic mix was cool like -
Ring of Fire, and Frank Sinatra's - That's Life, I can't wait to see what is on this edition.
