  • Discovering Bowie

I knew nothing about David Bowie or his music a month ago, but now, after being enthralled by his 1972 TOTP performance of "Starman", I felt I had to have a listen to the rest of his music, right from the beginning. (Well, from 1969).

Space Oddity - I've used the US title here so that Last.fm doesn't get confused.

Going back to this album after listening to TMWSTW and Hunky Dory, it struck me again just how fantastic the majority of it is. It might be full of young hopes and dreams and is a bit (okay, very) hippieish, but there's a tang of anger and bitterness present, especially in Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed, and the whole of Memory of a Free Festival seems like Bowie's singing with tongue firmly in cheek. And then there's the story of the Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud, a song like something out of a musical (in a good way!)…

  • One Big Halloween Playlist - 400+ Songs! (Suggestions Welcome)

    26 oct. 2008, 2h36m par MoogleFan

I've been working on this playlist since around 2005 or so, using many of these songs in Halloween mixes at my house, for friends, at my former school, events, etc., etc., and often on shuffle at various times of the year. I'm sure there is still a lot missing here, so suggesting artists, albums, and tracks that are Halloween-suitable (or just good for spookiness, haunting introspection and/or dark-ish party music in general) is very much welcome. Even if they're from artists that I have on here, because, in all probability, I've missed some glaringly obvious ones. What's more, if you're a subscriber you can play all the streamable ones I've listed from my Halloween tag-station here: http://www.last.fm/listen/usertags/mooglefan/halloween

    Legend: # = my additions, ** = others' suggestions

Here's the list of Halloween tracks, LAST EDITED: 10/31/2008
Where Fools Go - 12 Rounds
    Hell's Bells - AC/DC
That Voodoo! - Adam and The Ants
    Vampires - Adam Ant
    Dark Messages - Air
    Ghost Song - Air

  • I love music shuffles.

    15 juin 2007, 1h50m par TheQuadpus

Why are you taking this shuffle quiz?
    Song: Israel
    Artist: Siouxsie and the Banshees
    Comment: That... makes little sense.

    What's currently in your fridge?
    We Are the Dead
    David Bowie
    hmmm...

    Your biggest nightmare?
    Know Your Chicken
    Cibo Matto
This would've been a better answer to the fridge question.

What place would you like to visit?
    Congo Conga
    Siouxsie and the Banshees
    The Congo?.. sure.

    A reason to commit suicide?
    Fist Fuck
    Nine Inch Nails
I suppose if taken in the context of Wish (the song this is a remix of) this could make some sense.

    Why are we here?
    Burn Up
    Siouxsie and the Banshees
I fucking love this song. That's why I'm here. Oh fire and brimstone...

Something you never dared say to anyone?
    Royally Fucked
    Mindless Self Indulgence
"Mom, Dad, why don't you finger me too?" Yep. I'd never say that to them.

One thing the world really doesn't need?
    Accuracy
    The Cure
I disagree. I think we all require some accuracy.

    What's your biggest unfulfilled wish?

  • An important lesson indeed

    12 juin 2006, 1h43m par slatterly

Much as I love my favorite musicians, I try not to hold any illusions about their infallability. Even the best of them have their bad days, musically - see that horrible travesty of an album commonly known as Smells Like Children. I'm almost positive that every single one of my musical idols (as determined by me, not Last.fm) has at least one song that, no matter how hard I try, does absolutely nothing for me, a hypothesis that I will now attempt to prove.

Marilyn Manson does amazingly well through four and a half studio albums, almost five full hours of music. The precise moment where he starts to go bad is on 'The Bright Young Things', a somewhat respectable twelve tracks into The Golden Age Of Grotesque. After 'Para-Noir', the album essentially turns into a miniature version of Trash: several different tries at the same song, and not even a very good song at that. ('Obsequey' would therefore parallel 'This Maniac's In Love With You' - a gem among tedium…
