  • My Ausmusic Month 100 greatest Aussie songs by Me + Gareth Liddiard's top 5 tracks

    24 nov. 2009, 14h36m par BlackCoffeeDuck

November is almost over so I better do this or I'll never do it. Here in Australia on Triple J radio is Ausmusic month and ABCTV show Rage has joined in this year too. In Jmag The Drones won the top spot in their "Greatest Aussie Song Ever" Top 30 as voted by Aussie muso's. Winning with ÉcouterShark Fin Blues, which got the most votes and so should they, check it all out here: http://blogs.abc.net.au/triplej/2009/10/greatest-aussie-songs-ever.html

Plus the other night The Drones won two A.I.R. Awards for "Independent Artist Of The Year" and "Best Independent Album" for Havilah and so should they too, check it out here: http://www.airawards.com.au/ (also they should win every A.R.I.A. award at the end of this week but will miss out more than likely because well, it's the crappy arias). Anyway I'm going to re-post Gareth Liddiard from The Drones top five votes for Jmag's greatest Aussie songs, which are:
    AC/DC - Jailbreak
    Dirty Three - Hope
Kim Salmon - Obvious Is Obvious
    Laughing Clowns - Collapse Board
    X - Revolution
Cool, eh? Plus now triple J’s "Like A Version Vol. 5" album is coming out at the end of this month with The Drones doing Suicide is Painless cover on it, yipee!

Now I was going to do a top 30 tracks too but it got bigger and bigger until it has turned into 100 tracks. It is my choices so most likely no one will agree with me (You could make your own too). These tracks are just my all-time favorite tracks from Aussie bands that I love and could listen to them forever. Also I have somehow numbered them too, which was so hard but I'll post it now because it's round about right (maybe tracks could go up or down in time) But to me these are the greatest Aussie songs ever. OK, that is it. I think I've picked a bit of everything but maybe more obscure than your normal top 100 Aussie chart. If you don't know something which sounds good to you please let me know and I'll do my best in letting you know where or how you can find it. I was going to write a line or two on each song but it really would take forever to do that so it's just a big long list again. There was reasons why for all of them and where they ended up in the chart but you can tell what I like and what I don't and a lot of bands or artists have been left out but I don't like them as much as the songs above. These I would listen to forever and if I could take over Triple J this is what I would play for you. What do you think???

  • CAUGHT LIVE -- Liam Finn & Eliza-Jane @ The Majestic 10/4/09

    12 oct. 2009, 4h07m par heyadamo

    Sun 4 Oct – Liam Finn & Eliza-Jane Barnes

This performance was an anomaly in quite a few ways. For one, it was held the same day as Madison's annual marijuana legalisation rally. For another, it was a break in Liam and Eliza Jane's regular schedule, which consists of warming up for Wilco. Whereas the duo would probably get 30-45 minutes tops in their supporting role, here as headliners they had all the time they needed. Although the crowd of 40-50 people was sparse, Liam & Eliza-Jane treated them to a freewheeling, good-natured 90 minutes of upbeat pop-rock.

The duo are supporting the recently released Champagne & Seashells and so began proceedings with the first two songs of that. The rest of the set alternated between the EP and Liam's solo debut I'll Be Lightning with a few surprises here and there. Although Liam's known by some as Neil Finn's dad or Tim Finn's nephew, his stage approach differed slightly from his elder relatives manning Crowded House and Split Enz. The billing of the duo was completely accurate: there was no opening act, and the two handled all the vocals and instrumental duties. In order to do this, the two leaned heavily on a bank of pedals, effects and machines, almost like a electronica act. Eliza-Jane stood in front of a bevy of percussion tools, as well as a box that triggered sound loops, and provided vocal assistance. Meanwhile, Liam sang and played guitar, and technology intervened when he felt a song needed a little extra oomph towards the end. He would play a main guitar line, loop it, discard his guitar and rush to the nearby drum kit. Liam used this looping technique quite often, which sometimes led to a song's conclusion sounding like a My Bloody Valentine jam session. That same desire for cacophony extended to the drumkit; his family's musical legacy allowed him access to more than a few great drummers, but the drummer he seems to emulate the most is Animal off the Muppet Show.

With the two seemingly bent on filling the Theatre with tons of sound, some of the nuances of the album material were lost. But any loss of texture was replaced by the duo's affable stage banter and devil-may-care set list (there wasn't one made in advance, as Liam admitted) It was easy to tell the two are used to playing together, and seemed overjoyed to be on stage as headliners. The two joked about the legalisation festival, as well as learning about the previous night's harvest moon from PBS presenter Jack Horkheimer. (This led to one of the surprises of the night, which was a lovely spare version of Neil Young's Harvest Moon.) Towards the end, Liam invited audience members he met from the festival on-stage, and played an extended instrumental jam where one played his bongos and the other freestyled. (The bongo player even stuck around to add to ÉcouterLead Balloon.) All in all, Liam and Eliza-Jane entertained the crowd, made a ruckus, and got to experience Wisconsin's state capital for the first time -- and perhaps not the last.

Stats, part 6: pop

    Today is pop's statistics overview.

    предыдущие посты / previous entries
    mainstream
    russian rock
    progressive rock
    black metal
    jazz

First of all, our traditional arrangement with respect to number of plays and number of listeners.

    Pic. 1 - full size

    Pic. 2 - full size

There's no surprise here, well-known persons Britney Spears, Madonna and Michael Jackson are the leaders. The mainstream pop is rather popular: millions of listeners, dozens of millions of plays.

    Pic. 3

From the last plot we can see, that the four leaders are rather far from the main massive of artists. Interesting.
The next one is the chart of specific number of scrobbles for pop artists.

    Pic. 4 - full size

And here the things go funny. Pop-punk band McFly leads the chart with specific number of scrobbles 48.5, when the average value is 18. Britney Spears with 44 plays per listener takes the second place.

    Pic. 5

The distribution through specific number of scrobbles looks a bit surprising: a plateau near the average breaks toughly from both sides.

    Pic. 6

Britney Spears.

The graph of shoutbox activity to number of listeners is nothing interesting itself. The really interesting thing is a terribly high number of messages in pop artists' shoutboxes. Britney Spears is especially notable.

    Pic.7

And here I see the effect of "potential barrier" again: only artists with more-than-average number plays per listener can have a lot of shouts. I've already seen the effect for three rather different genres.

The total playcount in pop-top-100 is a bit more, than one billion.

  • Black Eyed Peas is like Pepsi

    22 jui. 2009, 15h23m par shirster

I can drink Coke everyday and not feel bored.

I can listen to Collective Soul, Air, Air Supply, Bob Marley, Bon Jovi, Boyz II Men, Crowded House, David Gilmour, Depeche Mode, Dido, Eminem, Enya, Erasure, Eric Clapton, Michael Jackson, Oasis, Phil Collins, Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, THE STREET BEATS, X JAPAN all day everyday and not feel bored.

But Black Eyed Peas is like Pepsi. At first, it feels different, feels good. But after just a short while, it becomes really boring. So boring that I cannot stand it anymore.
