27 déc. 2014, 5h11m par solidpandaI know, that's an awfully harsh title. Far harsher than I really mean it to be. I always try to focus more on music I like rather than music I dislike. The latter is just too easy to be of much use. It's more constructive to divine why you like music, in my (not-so-) humble opinion. In any case, I felt the need to write a few words about these albums, mostly to discuss what it was that left me feeling hollow.
Again, Sort Alpha.
Agalloch - The Serpent & The Sphere
These guys can do no wrong in many critical circles. However, something about this album just hasn't clicked with me. Now, I admit I probably haven't given it the time or attention it requires, so perhaps my opinion will change in the coming months. All I know is that, in the months that I've had it, precious little has stayed with me.
Alcest - Shelter
No, it's not what you think. I rather like his shoegaze wanderings. But, as pleasant as this is for background music, there isn't much meat here. …
25 déc. 2014, 16h11m par bendingtreeI'm convinced that there are so many talented musicians out there making exceptional music that I don't need to worry about finding quality music -- it's everywhere, even on the radio (sometimes). The trouble is finding artists that actually say something to you instead of just entertaining you with their catchy melodies. But catchy melodies are OK, too. We operate on many different levels. Some of the albums below spoke to me deeply; others merely titillated my eardrums -- but all of them deserve to be on this list. It is, after all, my list and I make up the rules.
1. Dornenreich : Freiheit
Dornenreich is the only band I know that plays poetry. It's not black metal, it's not neofolk, it's not ambient--it's not just music, see. I run the risk of sounding pretentious when I say something like that, but there's no other way to say it and get it right. …
17 déc. 2014, 4h27m par maplejet2013...was a great year for music. Alter Bridge released a killer hard rock album Fortress, not to the delight of Scott Stapp, who is apparently "homeless" now. So did Queens of the Stone Age with ...Like Clokwork, a much needed rock album. I rocked out a pair of great metal albums from Soilwork with The Living Infinite (proving a band that moved towards alternative metal can go back to what made them great...can't say the same about In Flames) and Killswitch Engage with Disarm The Descent, while not as great as previous albums, it delivered a lot of great songs while not trying to aim for mainstream rock singles....the stuff that doomed All That Remains a couple years ago.
And of course, Daft Punk with Random Access Memories, an album that strayed me away from the dark side known as dubstep...feeling like a "reset" on the edm genre.
And of course there were several other noteworthy releases as well from Alice in Chains, Avenged Sevenfold... …
8 déc. 2014, 3h18m par doesntexist420Well, it was 2014, another year. Time to start pounding on those keys like you know and give a fuck what you're elaborating about. And it was a year, that's for sure. Oh, and there was music of course, music to be heard which could be a cause for celebration or an irritating discontent. This is a proclamation of the former and a denigration of the latter. And now that the stupid pretentious introductory paragraph I so drunkenly spat out is over, go fuck yourselves with your own scaly genitals until you bleed cum, you sick uncle fucking bastards.
2014 has continued what has already begun, a full fledged takeover of reuniting acts and returning artists of years past coming back to demonstrate value all over the place and on the faces of the young. Many of my favorites from 2013 weren't from new artists but rather old artists making a return after a long break. And that is unsurprising, because the state of new music that the media would like you to be aware of these days is an…
