Burzum est l’un des groupes fondateurs du mouvement de Black metal norvégien.
Burzum est composé d’un membre, Varg Vikernes dit Count Grishnackh (né le 11 février 1973), Vikernes assurant à la fois le chant, les guitares, la basse, les claviers et la boite à rythmes. Burzum est avant tout un groupe de studio qui ne s’est jamais produit en live.
Le nom Burzum tire son origine d’une langue inventée par J.R.R. Tolkien et présente dans son roman Le Seigneur des Anneaux. Ce mot signifie « ténèbres » dans le Noir Parler de Sauron. Varg Vikernes est aussi connu sous le pseudonyme de « Comte Grishnackh », Grishnákh étant un Orque que l’on retrouve dans Le Seigneur des Anneaux.
Le 1er album, éponyme, sorti en 1992 fait l’effet d’une bombe dans le paysage du métal extrême : entièrement interpreté, réalisé et produit par Varg à la va-vite avec des instruments de fortune, il est à mille lieues des grosses productions soignées et formatées en vogue chez les groupes de l’époque.1993 fut l’année cruciale pour Varg.
Ses albums de Black metal sont connus pour leurs violentes atmosphères sédatives, leurs fréquentes répétitions hypnotiques de structure simple mais souvent profonde, et leur rythme moins rapide et frénétique que la plupart des autres groupes de ce style.

Sure I know there is flaws in the logic I used however I still consider black metal a form of rock music. And this was produced independent label that makes it "indie rock" is the strictest sense. Besides I'm not really a hipster, the term implies I'm following trends, which I don't. I was never very popular. If my hair makes me an emo, call me emo, if my music makes me a hipster faggot, by all means treat yourself to a free blow, I'm done here I have nothing more to really say. Except of course anyone who JUST listens to "true metal" just for the fact is "ture metal" is denying other very decent music and living a very closed off exsistance, I resent people who can't look at themselves and pick out their own flaws and think for themselves. Unless of course, you truly believe that jazz, rock & roll and blues (which all feature guitars, drums and bass, and all happen to predate rock music) are nothing more than rock music, and all follow the same basic formula. Black metal is rock music, it's a type of metal and metal is a form of rock music. Just because it has lots of distortion doesn't change the fact it's guitars, drums and bass. Next you'll be saying shoegaze isn't rock music, that has loads of distortion as well. I'm not going to argue all day that metal isn't rock, it is. It's like arguing black isn't white. Simple logic here: All music that has guitars, drums and bass is rock music. Black metal has guitars drums and bass, thus black metal is rock music.I know there is flaws in Aristotle's formula but it was the logic I was using. Say metal isn't rock all day, you'll still be wrong.
