Bob Dylan (né Robert Allen Zimmerman le 24 mai 1941 à Duluth, Minnesota) est un musicien et auteur-compositeur-interprète américain dont le style musical a évolué au fil des années : rock, folk, country, blues sont les exemples de la diversité de son œuvre.
La famille de Bob Dylan est venue d’Europe de l’Est en fuyant les pogroms contre les juifs. Ses grands parents paternels étaient des juifs d’Odessa. Ils sont arrivés aux Etats Unis en 1905. Ses grands parents maternels étaient juifs lituaniens et sont arrivés aux Etats-Unis en 1902.
Depuis ses débuts dans les années 1960, Dylan a, par ses textes et par sa recherche de voies nouvelles (à l’encontre de son public parfois), sensiblement marqué la culture musicale contemporaine: en témoignent les nombreux artistes qui se réclament de son influence (David Bowie, Jeff Buckley, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, etc.), ou le vaste répertoire des chansons qu’il a composées, dans lequel puisent des musiciens de tous les horizons et de toutes les générations (Tom Waits, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Mark Knopfler, Neil Young, U2, P.J. Harvey, The White Stripes, Syd Barrett, Guns N’ Roses, Jimi Hendrix etc.).
Les références dont s’inspire Bob Dylan pour faire évoluer son art sont non seulement à chercher du côté de musiciens américains légendaires, tels Hank Williams, Woody Guthrie et Robert Johnson, mais aussi chez des écrivains de la Beat generation, comme Jack Kerouac ou Allen Ginsberg. Il apprécie également Arthur Rimbaud, à qui il sera souvent comparé, et s’intéresse à des dramaturges, tel Bertolt Brecht.

When it comes to The Basement Tapes, I do it like this. I skip a few Dylan tracks, and listen to Katie's Been Gone and Bessie Smith and cry a little bit. When it's on the 5 cd Bootleg I have (The Genuine Basement Tapes) then I listen to alot of the Dylan stuff, and still alot of the Band stuff. It really seems that some of the best Dylan songs didn't make it on the offical album...damn shame.

The Basement Tapes is an album that I didn't like at first in any way. I went back months later and now I can't get enough of it. And that really doesn't happen often.

I'm surprised to see so many (somewhat) negative opinions of The Band on here. Personally I find The Basement Tapes to contain truly classic music, but I think anyone that isn't really feeling it should keep in mind that they weren't recording this stuff with the intention of releasing an album (at least at first). The bootleggers and public demand is why we have it released as it is today. For a much better representation of The Band's historic spot in music I have to recommend both their "Music From Big Pink" album and their self titled "The Band" album. Both of those truly show The Band at the height of their powers and of Robbie Robertson as an excellent song writer.
