Blind Guardian est un groupe allemand de Power metal, voire Tolkien metal, né dans les années 80 sous le nom de Lucifer’s Heritage. Ils s’inspirent de l’Heroic Fantasy et du monde de John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. Au fil des albums, ils misent davantage sur la clarté, n’hésitant pas à adopter des mélodies qui s’inspirent de la musique épique. Par ce biais, ils se distancent de nombre de formations européennes pour former, avec Helloween principalement, la base du power-speed germanique. Ils s’inspirent sans distinction de toutes les grandes sagas, de l’Iliade au Seigneur des Anneaux, en passant par Lancedragon, Nietzsche, les sujets religieux, et surtout le Silmarillion, qui inspire tout l’album Nightfall in Middle-Earth. Les textes sont composés par le chanteur Hansi Kürsch, et les mélodies par l’ensemble des membres, en alternance ou en collaboration.

About power metal sounding the same... Well, yeah, pretty much. Like doom metal. And heavy metal, for that matter. Not to mention American mainstream rock music. Only that Guardian in my mind isn't one of those 99,9% that actually sound pretty much the same, maybe that's why they just are that damn good in the first place. :) Once one listens to one "genre" a bit more, though, one begins to notice that pretty much each band has their own things and don't sound the same after all. It's all about the viewpoint. And if someone still states it sounds the same, well, that's alright with me, possibly our views of "sounding the same" just radically vary. Nevertheless, I like those pretty similar styles and ways of making and playing music the majority of those we call power metal bands, I admit, have. I actually like that so much I could say it's my favorite music style, at least most of times, and overally. :)
