William Martin Joel, plus connu sous le nom de Billy Joel, est né le 9 mai 1949 dans le quartier du Bronx à New York. Pianiste, chanteur et compositeur, il démarre dans la pop music en 1973 avec le disque « Piano Man ». Il a gagné pas moins de 6 Grammy Award durant sa carrière, mise entre parenthèse depuis 1993.
Avec plus de 100 millions de disques vendus dans le monde, il est selon la RIAA le sixième dans l’ordre des artistes ayant vendu le plus de disque aux USA. Il continue à parcourir le monde pour se produire en public (en particulier avec Elton John) et il écrit encore de la musique classique.
