Bal-Sagoth est un groupe de heavy metal symphonique britannique originaire de Yorkshire en Angleterre.
Le groupe se démarque des groupes de black metal traditionnels tels Darkthrone ou Dimmu Borgir par une grande présence du clavier, qui apporte une dimension épique très importante dans les compositions du groupe, renforçant leur côté battle metal.
D’autre part, Bal-Sagoth détient probablement le record des titres les plus longs, que ce soit pour les albums (voir Starfire Burning Upon the Ice-Veiled Throne of Ultima Thule) ou pour les chansons (comme The Dark Liege of Chaos is Unleashed at the Ensorcelled Shrine of A`zura Kai (the Splendour of a Thousand Swords Gleaming Beneath the Blazon of the Hyperborean Empire Part II ou And Lo, When the Imperium Marches Against Cul-kothoth, Then Dark Sorceries Shall Enshroud the Citadel of the Obsidian Crown).

You know, Bal-Sagoth gets a lot of shit for being "nerdy" or "D&D metal" but is Satan really that much less ridiculous? Or how about all the viking metal out there? It's essentially the same shit. Songs of war and conquest, of worshipping pagan gods. It's silly as fuck. that people take any of it seriously is utterly beyond my ability to comprehend. Bal-Sagoth is awesome. that's all there is to it.

Their lyrics are what really made me love their sound and theme. What other band has a song about the Silver Surfer? The narration is easily my favorite vocal style but the screaming is just as good.
