Formé en 1988 sous le nom de Scum, c’est en 1992 que le groupe prend le nom d’Amon Amarth, signifiant Mont du Destin (en Sindarin, langue inventée par Tolkien). Ayant la volonté de créer un death influencé par l’imagerie et la mythologie Viking, leur musique en devient épique et mélodique.
Très rapidement la formation entre en studio pour enregistrer leur première démo, Thor Arise (jamais sortie à cause des problèmes de son), qui sera suivie peu de temps après par une seconde nommée The Arrival Of The Fimbul Winter. Celle-ci leur permet de signer sur le label Pulverised Records, où ils enregistreront leur premier MCD Sorrow Throughout The Nine Worlds avec Peter Tägtgren (Hypocrisy).
Le groupe signe ensuite sur le label Metal Blade, plus important, pour sortir leur premier album Once Sent From The Golden Hall en 1998, toujours avec le même producteur.
En 1999, après stabilisation du line-up (notamment par le remplacement de Martin Lopez (ex-Opeth) par Fredrik Andersson à la batterie), le groupe produit un nouvel album, The Avenger, qui sera suivi en 2001 par The Crusher, en 2002 par Versus The World, puis en 2004 par Fate Of Norns. Ces sorties successives et de qualités leur permet de monter en puissance. Amon Amarth enchaîne sur plusieurs tournées et sort le DVD Wrath of the Norsemen en 2006, en parallèle avec l’album With Oden On Our Side. En 2008 sort Twilight of the Thunder God.
