A few weeks ago I downloaded a promotional torrent of SXSW 2008 showcase artists. The torrent contained one track by approximately 750 artists. Since then I’ve spent the past couple of weeks listening to this music at work, rating the tracks according to my own personal preferences using iTunes. In the meantime, a neat online social-mixtaping site called muxtape has come into my awareness. The site allows you to create a mixtape and upload up to 12 tracks, which stream on the site. Tracks can be added and removed, and fans can subscribe to muxtapes using RSS. Another cool feature is the simplicity of the URL (i.e. mattbrehmer.muxtape.com).

So I’ve listened to a lot of noteworthy artists in the past few weeks. I figured I may as well share what I liked. The problem here was condensing ~750 songs into 12 (after a critical rating scheme, I condensed to a list of 29-star tracks and 1 5-star track). Thus I compromised and created two muxtapes (side A and side B).

THIS LIST IS NO LONGER ACCURATE. It will remain in it's current state forever as a reminder of the time when I had this many CDs, but the fact of the matter is, most of these albums SUCK and I was either too young to realize it, or just simply in denial. So I sold them.

This is simply me masturbating to how many CDs I physically own and making an online list of them and updating it constantly as well as the number of CDs I own. Feel free to leave comments of awe or disgust. I don't really care. I own a lot of CDs and I'm dang proud.

So I sucked it up and went to Cambridge on Sunday to see Cloak/Dagger, New Mexican Disaster Squad, Lock And Key, Fifth Hour Hero, and No Trigger. It was an incredible show.

But while there I saw a poster for a show on Monday night, featuring The American Plague, American Princes, Chuck Ragan (Formerly of Hot Water Music), and my favorite active band, The Lawrence Arms!!!

So I skipped all my classes Monday and stayed in Boston. Totally worth it.

It was American Princes "Never Grow Old", which is fine, it's a decent song. Look at the run-up, though, full of really excellent bands (and not like I don't have some clunkers on my iTunes...I'm still kind of embarrassed about all that Riverboat Gamblers).

Here were the last five which, oddly enough, represent some of my very favorite bands.

9999 Detroit Cobras "Heartbeat": This is one tough-assed band with excellent, obscuro taste in covers. I was going to interview Rachel once, but the only slot she could spare was like 1 a.m. on a Tuesday and I said no thanks.

9998 Man Man "The Fog or China": From the great first album, which everyone but me and Nick Sylvester slept on. Going to see them again next week...very excited.

9997 Arcade Fire "Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)": For once, the hype machine was right. I talked to Win Butler during the feeding frenzy, and the best thing he could say about being flavor of the month was that it was better than working in a mustard factory. …
