Fri 17 Sep – Alice in Chains, Deftones, Mastodon

There's a lot to say going in to an Alice in Chains show. How much greater it could have been if Layne Staley were there in William DuVall's place, how predictable the setlist is, rarely anything positive. That being said, the fact of the matter will always be to me that it's a miracle we're still here seeing the band to this day, when they could have easily given up and died when Staley left us. And honestly, people can feel free to disagree with me, but I truly do believe Black Gives Way to Blue is the best album of 2009 and one of the most pleasantly surprising things I've ever seen musically. So with that in mind, what did I think of this show?

I thought it was one of the best experiences I've ever had at a concert, by far. Was the setlist predictable? For the most part, yes. I'm not expecting to go there and hear Private Hell, but that's a moot point. The crowd was fantastic, even the songs that we all expected to hear were top notch…

If it ever comes to pass that you fall in love with a girl, yet still somehow understand that there are fundamental differences you'll never get past, well, "No Excuses" would be a real good song for the two of you to pick as your own.

I've been re-reading an SF classic by the name of When Gravity Fails lately; once upon a time, it taught me the Arabic word Inshallah, meaning, 'if Allah wills.' It is used by speakers of Arabic, if George Alec Effinger is to be believed, as a way to frame their dealings, their actions, and their relationships, in such a way that they can remove the worry and the heartache from them. Many Americans say, "it is what it is" in a less successful attempt to frame things the same way.

"Was die zanger niet dood?" is de vraag die ik het meest hoor, als ik mensen vertel dat ik naar een concert van Alice in Chains ga. Begin jaren '90 was Alice in Chains één van de Seattle Four, met Pearl Jam, Nirvana en Soundgarden. Pearl Jam bestaat nog, Soundgarden is inmiddels uit elkaar gevallen, en de zanger van Nirvana stierf op 5 april 1994 aan een kogel, die hij zeer waarschijnlijk kort daarvoor zelf had afgevuurd. Voor Nirvana betekende dit het einde. Precies acht jaar later, op 5 april 2002, stierf Layne Staley aan een overdosis. Zonder Layne Staley, maar met William Duvall, stond Alice in Chains op 19 november in de 013 in Tilburg.

Dat de band nog altijd populair is, blijkt als het concert binnen enkele weken uitverkoopt. Er zijn dan ook vooral fans uit de glorietijd van Alice in Chains, toen ik nog jong was en de namen Kurt Cobain en Eddie Vedder nog nooit gehoord had. Alice in Chains weet gelukkig waarvoor de mensen zijn gekomen. …
