Alice in Chains est un groupe de rock américain formé à la fin des années 1980 à Seattle. À l’instar de Pearl Jam, Nirvana et Soundgarden, Alice in Chains fut l’un des groupes les plus influents sur la scène grunge de Seattle. Bien que leur style musical s’inspire plus du heavy metal que du punk, le groupe a été très vite apparenté au mouvement grunge, tant à cause de leurs origines que pour leur textes introspectifs voire morbides, representatifs du mal-être d’une génération aux prise avec la drogue et la mort. Nb : Layne Staley est mort d’une overdose le 20 avril 2002 à l’âge de 34 ans.

Disparition de Staley (1998-2002)

Cantrell est déterminé à continuer Alice in Chains et tente de rester en contact avec Staley, mais la santé de ce dernier rend désormais impossible un retour rapide. Cantrell réalise son premier album solo en 1998, Boggy Depot. Tous les membres du groupe, à l’exception de Staley, ainsi que le producteur Toby Wright participent significativement à l’album. Un certain nombre de fans considèrent ainsi Boggy Depot comme un album égaré d’Alice in Chains.
En 1998, le groupe se réunit au complet pour la dernière fois et enregistre quatre nouveaux titres Get Born Again, Fear The Voices, Lying Season et Died. Quatre titres qui apparaîtront à l’automne 1999 dans le coffret Music Bank qui retrace la carrière du groupe. Le coffret contient 48 titres, dont des raretés, d’anciennes démos et des extraits des différents albums. Le groupe sort son premier best-of, Nothing Safe: Best of the Box. Un album live (Live) ainsi qu’un autre best-of (Greatest Hits) viennent compléter la discographie du groupe.

    @somemusicdude LOL, Kurt Cobain is a lot of things, but not a good guitar player. Congratulations on getting guitar 7, whatever the hell that may be. But you might wanna open up your ears instead of yelling to everyone that he was the best. I hate metallica but any idiot can see he is 1000 times the guitarist Kurt would ever be. Kurt was your average powerchord player, of which you have millions, nothing more and nothing less!! Wanna talk about real guitar playing, please check out some Tommy Emmanuel or Mark Knopfler and then dare to say that Kurt is beter, hah.....Kurt a good guitar player...rofl!!! And yes, I do play guitar, but I doubt i'm a guitar 7 player!!! Rofl......We used to play nirvana songs in our band before we started on decent and interesting songs because they were so easy!!!
