A l’âge de 7 ans, Alice McLeod étudie le piano classique; le dimanche, elle joue de l’orgue dans les églises de Detroit, sa ville natale. Son frère, le bassiste Ernie Farrow, la lance dans la frénésie du be-bop. Elle prend des cours avec Bud Powell et devient l’une des rares femmes acceptées dans un monde d’hommes. Aucun musicien ne fait une objection quand elle déboule dans le groupe de Coltrane, en 1965, et prend la place de l’indiscutable pianiste McCoy Tyner. Lorsque John meurt, deux ans plus tard, Alice poursuit sa carrière, se produisant en leader au côté de stars comme Carlos Santana, Ornette Coleman, Pharoah Sanders, Wayne Shorter et le même McCoy Tyner, peu rancunier.
