Music Survey
3 nov. 2009, 12h44m par Anneli_Elisabet
Which bands/artist do you own the most albums by?
*counting from memory* four Alanis Morissette ... five Queen ... five Håkan Hellström ... six Rufus Wainwright ... Yeah, Rufus it is.
What was the last song you listened to?
Leonard Cohen -
So Long, Marianne
What's in your CD player right now?
My CD player is on the other side of the sea, so nothing. Latest album I bought and uploaded to my laptop was Lily Allen - It's Not Me, It's You.
What's your favorite local band/group?
The Lloyd, I guess.
What was the last show you attended?
Peace & Love 2009! Go Borlänge! ;)
What's the most musically involved you have ever been?
I sing. Choirs, mostly. I've had singing lessons, and a few piano lessons. Oh, and cello lessons, waaaay back. I have a standing invitation to sing the solo of "O Holy Night" on midnight mass in my home church and when I was a kid, I used to write little songs to amuse myself. I still make up nonsensical improvs when I'm out walking without my walkman ... I think that's about it.
What show are you looking forward to?
Rufus Wainwright and Family, "A Not So Silent Night" in Royal Albert Hall in December.
What is your favorite band shirt?
For looks and comfort - my David Bowie - Aladdin Sane T-shirt.
For treasured memories - my Bruce Springsteen - Magic Tour T-shirt.
What musician would you like to hang out with for a day?
Oh, dear. Rufus maybe. Or The Boss. Or Leonard Cohen. Too Hard!
Who is one musician or group you wish would make a comeback?
So many people I listen to are dead! :( Can I wish people back from the grave? Cause that'd be Jeff Buckley then.
Who is one band/artist you've never seen live but always wanted to?
Used to be The Boss. Now that I've seen him, I don't know. I'll go for Jeff Buckley again. Or Antony and the Johnsons, among the living.
Name 5 of your favorite songs of all time?
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band -
Thunder Road
Håkan Hellström -
Nu kan du få mig så lätt
Lars Winnerbäck - Nästan perfekt
Simon & Garfunkel -
America
The Rolling Stones -
Wild Horses
Name 4 flawless albums:
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band - Live 1975-85 (Display Box)
Håkan Hellström - Känn Ingen Sorg För Mig Göteborg
Rufus Wainwright - Release The Stars
Queen - A Kind of Magic
How many music related videos/DVDs do you own?
3 (1 Stones concert DVD, Elvis, The Boat That Rocked - I think the music is a huge part of that, ok? Can't think of any more right now.)
How many concerts/shows have you been to in total?
6 (counting Peace & Love as one) that I've decided to go to myself and not just followed my parents or my school to. Or sung at. (Counting all those as well it would be more than I can even guess).
What was your last musical "phase" before you wisened up?
The Buffy phase? :P Listened to - or bought without listening! - a lot of music simply because it had been on the show. I don't regret it though. It widened my musical horizons quite dramtically, introducing me to dozens of bands and singers from The Who and Cream to Sarah McLachlan and Alison Krauss.
What's your "guilty pleasure" that you hate to admit to liking?
Right now: Boyzone - Love You Anyway
Generally everything that I find myself liking that's very nineties (like boybands! :P) or hiphop (like Eminem) or just plain mainstream. Though I guess Håkan is pretty mainstream by now. But I love him anyway (haha).
Who is your favorite musician?
Oh, don't make me! Bruce ... or Håkan ... or Bruce ... or Håkan ... aaargh! -

Halloween Playlist!
31 oct. 2009, 20h40m par pecusita
Maybe I should had done this sooner instead of waiting for the exact day of Halloween... Oh well, I've been inspired to do this today!
These are basically song that fall under at least one of the following criteria:
- Sound eerie or as dark as the belly of a dragon on a post-hangover Sunday morning.
- Depicts murderous anger.
- Invoke your soul to be part of dark rituals (and try to exorcise them in one of these song)
Needles to say, some of them can get downright terrifying. To be fair, I only included one track per artist and gave them a somewhat logical order.

1. How did you get into 29?
Édith Piaf - I don’t remember. I guess attention to her music was called when I started listening to Jeff Buckley, the fact that he was a fan of hers made me curious. But I’ve always loved
La foule ...even before I even knew it was her song. :)
2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
No Doubt - probably
Just A Girl
3. How many albums by 13 do you own?
Jeff Buckley - well, he’s only got one studio album, but I’ve got most of his releases. Grace, Grace (Legacy Edition), Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk, Mystery White Boy, Live At Sin-é (Legacy Edition).
4. What is your favorite song by 5?
Kings of Leon - that’s a toughie… a toss-up between
The Bucket because it’s just so catchy and
Taper Jean Girl because this is THE best song when you see them live.
5. What is your favorite song by 15?
…And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead -
To Russia My Homeland I don’t know why, I’m a lyrics person, and I am known for my hatred of ambient or instrumental songs, but I LOVE that song…
6. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
Muse - they’re all good, I guess. I don’t think there’s one particular song that I can say “makes me happy.”
7. What is your favorite song by 10?
Rufus Wainwright - AH! I can’t pick just one! OK,
In My Arms (:
8. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
Bob Dylan - I don’t think I can say I have a good memory about him as an artist or his music... I have a bad memory about a live Bob Dylan show, but that’s not really the question. :x
9. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
Glasvegas - YES. As with Radiohead, a song that’s supposed to invoke depression, or in this case sadness/disillusionment/disappointment, has the complete opposite effect on me: “It’s My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry”
10. How many times have you seen 26 live?
Rise Against - zero. And I don't think I would. Let's just say it's never been a priority.
11. What is the first song you heard by 23?
Bright Eyes - I’m a late bloomer, “Another Travelin’ Song”
12. What is your favorite album by 11?
Interpol - Antics, hands down.
13. Who is your favorite member of 1?
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Robert Levon Been.
14. Have you ever seen 14 live?
Queen - no.
15. What is a good memory involving 27?
Green Day - don’t recall any… no, wait, I liked Green Day, but the first time I heard 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, I was hooked. That song
Going to Pasalacqua really struck a chord.
16. What is your favorite song by 16?
Dead Man’s Bones - “My Body’s A Zombie For You” and "Young & Tragic" ..oh and "Name In Stone" and "Flowers Grow Out of My Grave" as well...yes, I know that's more than one, but I can't help most of their songs are so good..and sound like they're from the 50s.. (:
17. What is your favorite album by 18?
Radiohead - OK Computer
18. What is your favorite song by 21?
The Beatles - "Hello, Goodbye" and "Hey Jude"
19. What is the first song you heard by 25?
Weezer - probably
Buddy Holly, I don’t remember

My First Record
24 oct. 2009, 20h58m par Anneli_Elisabet
I'm something of a discophile. I don't collect LP's, but for a 23 year old, I am awfully stuck to the old format of compact disc albums, not at all embracing the digital era. But of course, bringing all my CD's across the sea wasn't really an option. So I downloaded all the music I own onto my laptop. With all that music so easy to reach, I find myself listening to albums that have been left to collect dust for years.
When I began to plan this blog entry, I meant it to be about Cornelis Vreeswijk, whom I'm coming back to after years of thinking him a bit too crude. Now though, I will simply recommend that you listen to his Bellman interpretations (Sjuttonde balladen särskilt) and leave that subject. Because what I want to tell you about now, is the first CD I ever owned. It has been abandoned and forgotten, for years and years, but never given away. It was given to me way back in, most likely, 1997, by my grandmother. I had wished for a CD with classical music. It seems very strange to me today, since I eventually turned out a rock girl, but such was my wish; before I discovered my first idols ABBA and The Beatles, long before Bruce Springsteen and Alanis Morissette, what feels like a lifetime before Håkan Hellström and Rufus Wainwright, I unwrapped a collection of classical music and played it on my parents' stereo - since I didn't have one of my own.
And listening to it today, I find myself recognizing every tune, every stroke of the violins, every key pressed on the pianos. Mozart, Shubert, Samuel Barber and Alessandro Marcello; all these composers' works, that I obviously must have listened to time and time again all those years ago when I was someone else, stir the same emotions in me now as they did then; as powerful as any modern pop or rock record ever has. I usually give ABBA the credit for being the start of my long, loving relationship with music, or the times when I would hear my mother play songs by Cornelis or LALLA HANSON on the guitar. ("Jag tog upp ett munspel ur min tomma, slitna ficka, och jag blåste trött när Anna sjöng en blues" is perhaps the first single line of lyric that I fell utterly in love with. It was stuck in my head for years before I found a recording of the song. I still think of my mum playing guitar when I hear it, even though I haven't seen her play since I was a child.)
But sitting here typing this, with soft piano music by Erik Satie sounding in my headset, I send a grateful thought to my dear late grandma, without whom I might have never had an appreciation for the sheer beauty of music - not confined to three minute hitsongs, however great, or just as melodies to clever, heart wrenching lyrics, or even as songs to sing together in choir, at campfires or with mum in the living room - but music in and of itself.
Så, tack för CD:n, mormor. Jag gillar den verkligen. -
Needtobreathe w/ Serena Ryder & The Alternate Routes

Thu 22 Oct – NEEDTOBREATHE, Serena Ryder, The Alternate Routes
Karma was on my side tonight.
Throughout the past week I have managed to get friends and co-workers into shows I was working for San Francisco's Live 105 (KITS) like the San Francisco debut of The Temper Trap, Brand New w/ Manchester Orchestra in San Jose, Treasure Island Music Festival & Weezer's secret Myspace show, now tonight, as I finally prepared to hand over my $15 for Needtobreathe's first show in San Francisco in over 3 years, the man in line in front of me just happened to have a +1 he wasn't going to use.
I got myself an unexpected free show, and it was a good one.
The Alternate Routes took the stage promptly at 8 o'clock to a half-empty room. With only 3 of the 5 members present, I wasn't sure what kind of set we were going to get, especially after opening with an acoustic version of "Aftermath" from their old album "Good and Reckless and True".
They plugged things in and turned things up and busted out some new songs and some old jams, set list:
Aftermath (Acoustic)
Rainbow Speaker
Toe The Line
The Future's Nothing New
On and On We Whisper
Asked You Twice
Lead singer Tim Warren got the crowd involved rather easily and the band managed to have the room filled up by the end of their set. They left to one of the louder ovations I've heard for an opening band in the past few months.
Next up was Atlantic Records singer/songwriter Serena Ryder who only continued the night of fantastic voices.
A singer who can easily appeal to fans of Alanis Morissette, Michelle Branch, Toby Lightman, Vedera, and other female fronted bands, she won the crowd over quickly with an accapella song called "Melancholy Blue" followed by some songs from her upcoming album, "Is It Ok?" and a snippet of rapping into TLC's "Waterfalls".
Serena has a great voice on her, and had people lining up to get her CDs for whatever price they were willing to pay, seriously, just put money in a bucket and get a CD. Not bad.
Next up was the night's headliner, NEEDTOBREATHE.
Making their first trip back to San Fran since a show 3 years ago at the same venue where they were direct support for the now defunct October Fall. Frontman Bear Rinehart acknowledged their absence over the past few years and mentioned a few times that it was nice to be playing a show at Cafe Du Nord, "to more than 17 people."
I went into the show without being completely sold on the new album, "The Outsiders", so I was hoping we'd get a fair mix of old & new stuff, what we got, however, wasn't surprising. The new tracks did dominate the set, with some of "The Heat" sprinkled in.
Set List:
The Outsiders
Streets Of Gold
More Time
Sweet Talk
Stones Under Rushing Water (W/ Serena Ryder)
Prisoner
Girl Named Tennessee
(A rockin track that I was not familiar with)
Lay 'em Down
I Won't Turn Back (Bo on vocals)
Washed By The Water
Let Us Love
Something Beautiful (unplugged)
Shine On (unplugged)
The new songs they played were the ones I've already grown to love, and they were all a lot of fun to hear live for the first time.
Bear said it was the first time they played "Shine On" in about a year, so it was nice to get at least 1 track from "Daylight", I thought an encore might include some more old tracks, but they didn't come back out after the unplugged set.
Overall, a great group of acts and a damn fine show.
Props to the fans who were so supportive of the openers, I got tired of hearing "YOU SUCK!" & "WEEZER!" at last night's show. They also managed to stay quiet during the final 2 songs of the set where the band wasn't even using a microphone.
Hopefully Needtobreathe makes their way back to San Francisco in less than 3 years and brings along the same type of quality acts that won over the crowd at this show.
