Both Agalloch and Ólafur Arnalds took inspiration from the movie Werckmeister Harmonies by Béla Tarr. Jànos, che main character, says that sentence talking about survival and regeneration of life.

Seems like some of you guys didn't even make it to the end of this album. Or you have inordinately short attention span. Otherwise you wouldn't be complaining about this "pointless" intro.

"intro is pretty pointless and serves no purpose." Nope, it fits perfectly.

intro is pretty pointless and serves no purpose. Thankfully Into the Painted Grey is pretty incredible.

Hate these. Dumb nature noises and "beautiful" violin theme. No sense.

Not enough emotion..? I think the violin sets in a melancholic feeling, with the birds chirping and the flowing stream... Btw here's a little review I found that asks about the intro and the flow of the album. "Despite the vastly different (if melodically complementary) sounds of its opening and closing moments, Marrow of the Spirit seems to hint at a cyclical, or perhaps spiral, development. How do you see the relationship between the individual songs on the record? Or the relationship of each song to the album's whole?" Agalloch: "The album is a journey. A full day, night, and new day unfold during the 65 minutes of this album. Each song is a different stop, a unique destination along the way from the river, through the forest, to the sea. But there is more. Like I said before, many of the concepts on this record exist within parallel universes. For instance, the story of "Into the Painted Grey" could easily take place within the "universe" of a microscopic cell in a drop of water."
