happy happy birthday to me galt ja schon seit jeher als eines der liebsten label im klienicum. zuletzt sah man die jungs und mädels aus athens aber eher mit einem kopfverband herumlaufen. denn es war etwas still geworden. hier ein cars can be blue release, dort einer von the smittens. sporadisch und ohne spürbaren zug. nun bahnt sich aber eine kleine veröffentlichungswelle an und wir geben bekannt.
zunächst haben wir da the lovely eggs aus dem uk. sie wollen mit ihrem debutalbum namens "if you were fruit" durchstarten. den release kann man als eine art gemeinschaftswerk zwischen hhbtm und cherryade records verstehen, die ihren jeweiligen output auch auf der anderen seite präsentieren. nun, die eggs bieten feist grinsenden powerpop mit damengesang (holly ross) und einem typen, der sich zuweilen einzumischen sucht (david blackwell), hinhören!

Thu 30 Apr – The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, afternoon naps

Mini-review

-Showed up late.

-Missed most of Band fag aftermath er...Afternoon Naps.

-Didn't expect much after that.

-Boy was I wrong.

-Zaza came on and stole the show. 30 minutes of pure noir coolness.

-After that...I we lost interest. My girl and l dashed off cause there was no way Pains At Being Pure At Heart was going to top that.

So we left. and got beer somewhere else that has..um good Beir.

Fri 27 Mar – A.C. Newman, The Broken West, afternoon naps

The chance to see A.C. Newman live brought me to the Grog Shop in Cleveland Heights for the first time in over half a year. I used to go there more often, but it seems most of the shows I'm interested in are at the Beachland Ballroom or Tavern these days. I'd seen A.C. with his band The New Pornographers twice before, once at the Beachland and once at the Newport in Columbus, but had not seen him playing in support of his solo records until now. He commented during the show that this was his first time playing the Grog Shop - for years every time he had come to Cleveland it had been to play the Beachland, and over the course of those years he had gone from playing to tiny crowds to playing a packed room at the New Pornographers show last April.

Local Cleveland band Afternoon Naps kicked off the evening. These guys are very twee - some people might say excessively so, but I really enjoy their music. …

Ra Ra Riot, Cut Off Your Hands, So Many Dynamos, 40's

Really great show! Let's start with the venue. It was my first visit to Akron's Musica, and I loved it! Tucked away in an ally next to the highly regarded "Crave," It's kinda hard to find which adds to it's anti establishment charm. There is an attached coffee shop, which I totally dig. Wish I could have gotten a Latte but unfortunately this show was on a wednesday (boo). Pretty terrible beer selection, but no worse than the grog shop.

OK moving on to the concert.... 40s, a local Canton band, opened. They were pretty good! They had a my morning jacket/ my chemical romance-y sound. Not so much my style, but I really liked the vocals. The arrangements lacked a certain elegance however. If this band un-muddies their sound it would be one to look out for in the future.
Next up... So many Dynamos. I actually really liked this band. Their sound check (which consisted of them YELLING into the mics) was the fucking most annoying thing ever…
