I'll never understand why some people call this "the best Aerosmith album" when there are Toys in the attic, get your wings, rocks etc.

Probably my favourite Aerosmith album! Why don't I own this?! It's nice how they've still got some of their old bluesier sound and strut in there, but also some of the stuff that would go on to fill stadiums. Pump and Get a Grip are great albums but sometimes sound like the soul got waylaid a little for the bombast. This album pitches it just right for me :)

In the months leading up to Permanent Vacation, all five members of Aerosmith completed drug rehabilitation and returned to the music with renewed fire and focus, and the result defines the term “comeback album.” Working with producer Bruce Fairbairn, Aerosmith honed in on everything that made the band great to begin with, but with a whole new sense of purpose. The drums were bigger, the choruses catchier, and the band hungrier than it had been since 1976. “Dude (Looks Like a Lady)” served as the perfect re-introduction; over the most ingratiating hook of their career, Aerosmith poked fun at their hair metal inheritors even as they bested their junior competitors at their own game. “Angel” defined the power ballad for the late ‘80s, while “Permanent Vacation,” “Girl Keeps Coming Apart,” and “Rag Doll” presented a whole new fusion of stadium rock, radio pop, and heavy metal. Even as they made new inroads to pop success, the old Aerosmith was also revived; “Heart’s Done Time," minor hit.

I remember when I tried to listen to this. I just thought, damn, Bruce Fairbairn really wrecked it with his insane overproduction. There's a fine line between bombastic fun and over-the-top mess - I thought this was the latter (are deathmatches between guitars, horns and synths really necessary?), and Pump was more towards the former.

Whatever tags next trends and massive markets will stick to this music in the future, this will remain one fucking milestone in rock music. Amen.
