Adam and the Ants, un groupe anglais, est dans les années 1970 d’abord associé au mouvement punk, pour rapidement devenir au début années 1980, un groupe de Pop / New wave.
Le groupe créé en 1977 à Londres, est composé de :
* Adam Ant (de son véritable nom Stuart Goddard) : chanteur et leader du groupe,
* Lester Square : guitare,
* Andy Warren : guitare basse,
* Paul Flanagan : percussions.
Lester Square a été remplacé par Mark Gaumont très tôt dans la carrière du groupe, avant même la sortie de leur premier album Dirk Wears White Sox (1979, Do It Records). Le titre serait une référence à l’acteur britannique Dirk Bogarde.
Ce premier opus est légèrement sombre, avec une connotation post-punk et quelques vestiges de glam rock. L’album n’étant pas un succès, Adam and the Ants demandent à Malcolm McLaren (manager des Sex Pistols) de redorer leur image. Entre autres, il leur fait porter des costumes de pirate.
Pendant qu’ils préparaient leur second album, McLaren convainc les Ants de quitter Adam et de former un autre groupe, les Bow Wow Wow.
Un nouveau groupe des Ants se crée alors avec :
* Marco Pirroni : guitare,
* Kevin Mooney : guitare basse,
* Terry Lee Miall ainsi que Merrick : percussions.
Adam Ant étant toujours le leader.
