A lot of Radiohead fans like shitty music.

Let me preface this by saying obviously musical taste is subjective and I completely understand where people who say "who the fuck cares what anyone listens to" are coming from. On the other hand, I think it's interesting to talk about the unique place Radiohead occupies in music.

Coldplay and Muse aren't like the worst things ever; if Radiohead had written like 42 or Uno in the 90s I'm sure we'd all enjoy them. But huge portions of each of their catalogues seem artistically bankrupt/soulless to me. I can get liking them in a limited fashion as bands that sort of repeatedly remake The Trickster and Karma Police, but I wouldn't trust anyone who recognized the brilliance of Radiohead but put those bands on the same pedestal. Isn't part of the appeal of Radiohead that

    A. they incorporate not just rock influences but jazz, electronic, classical, ambient, etc.

    B. they disdain the self-aggrandizing garbage corporate music establishment

Neither of which Coldplay or Muse does. They both seem to me to be perfectly happy to write similar, increasingly grandiose albums over and over and be the biggest band in the world as backed by EMI/Warner Bros. Also, Radiohead doesn't wear costumes. (Yet - let's hope those hats aren't here to stay.)

I guess I'm just as surprised that the artists Radiohead fans listen to are Arcade Fire, The Strokes, or Interpol, because while they're less obviously commercially-inclined and more en vogue than Coldplay or Muse, they're really not much more innovative. I'm surprised Radiohead's top artists aren't more avant garde – Burial, Flying Lotus, Christian Scott, Nicolas Jaar, J Dilla, Modeselektor, Aphex Twin, Philip Glass, Gonjasufi, whatever... Doesn't listening to Radiohead make other people fed-up with stagnant rock 'n roll? Am I really the only person who identifies 21st century Radiohead more with the acts that Thom promotes on the office charts than with indie or alternative rock? It perturbs me when reviewers for mainstream publications make out like Radiohead is the only serious group that attracts a broad audience, but I guess that might be true. I hope years of Radiohead will expand (note I didn't say improve) more people's tastes.

Portishead, Sigur Ros, and 13-era Blur do seem appropriate similar artists to me though.

I like Coldplay. I love Radiohead. It make sense. I like all kind of music. Why do you, in the first place, relate Coldplay to Radiohead?

You must be new to Radiohead. You'll find out why when you start meeting more hardcore fans/cunts.

I'm not new to Radiohead, daaah. Did you think that because the fans, as you mentioned, are doing the same pretentious & naive comparison as Chuck Klosterman always does/did? It's just empty words.

May I recommend Jonny Greenwood is the Controller, Madlib's 420 Chalice All-Stars, Scientist's Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires, and De Facto's Légende du Scorpion à Quatre Queues? Light up a fat one or whatever your chosen method of getting drugs into your body is and oh man. The excellent keys player from De Facto worked with Sublime at some point if that influences your decision.

Well I think it'd be silly to deny that Coldplay took a lot of influence from that OK Computer sound at their outset. Not their only influence, U2 fans have told me they sound a lot like U2 as well then I find that easy to believe. But yeah comparing their current work is meaningless.

Umm, because you were asking why they were relating Coldplay to Radiohead? I would of figured an older fan would of known that the comparisons Muse and Coldplay have been going on FOREVER and people always bitch about these two bands being Radiohead ripoffs (I think there's a certain drop of truth in these accusations, as Martin has said he'd "give my left ball to write anything as good as OK Computer." and for me Muse is just awful.) I don't think it's unfair to say that those two bands have been influenced by the 'Head.

All I'm saying is that these comparisons have been going on for fucking ever and people can't seem to get over it.

  • I read the first post and laughed, it is the perfect example of why I hate most Radiohead fans.

Coldplay are good, they're no Radiohead, but some of their songs, notably A Rush of Blood to The Head, Fix You, God Put a Smile, are definitely on a par with some Radiohead stuff, and far better than a lot of Radiohead's newer releases, like The King of fucking Limbs.

Point is, Radiohead would probably be more annoyed to find out how close-minded some of their fans are than to find out that they listen to Coldplay.

The beauty of music today is that there's a sound for every one, we have more variety today than ever before, Now I'm 21 but i grew up listening to real music (i am egoistic) such as Ry Cooder, The Doors, Pink Floyed, Concrete blonde, BB king, Robert Johnson, Eric Clapton, Joe Satriani, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Traveling Wilburys and many many more that formed my great taste of music that i have today =P.
but back on to the discussion of the modern era IMHO there is no band that I've heard of that even comes close to how musically talented these guys are, don't get me wrong there's a shit load of great bands out there today but not in these guys league.

    Hmmm...

I think you're wrong- partly, no offense. People can listen to whatever they want- after all you can't control your opinions of things, and I do listen to Radiohead, Muse (although Radiohead are my favourite band and Muse are a few bands down the list) and Coldplay (Only the early stuff, and not very often) but I don't agree with the grouping of those artists just because they may fall under the EXTREMELY vague genre of Alternative (not so much Coldplay any more) but Radiohead are so much more than that and it seems that people who do group them are very unexposed and unadventurous musically.

  • The thing is that Muse and Coldplay are really popular rock bands, so there's going to be crossover between people who like Muse/Coldplay and people who like almost any band under that umbrella - particularly other popular bands like Radiohead. Muse *are* terrible (and Coldplay are not even trying to be good at this point) but some people just have a low threshold for the kind of music that they like. I understand why someone who likes Muse would also like Radiohead; I understand why someone who likes Coldplay would like Radiohead. I'd be confused - and fascinated! - if someone who was really into N*Sync was also really into Radiohead.

  • Anyone who listens to Muse doesn't "deserved" to listen Radiohead.

    I loathe Muse.

    Coldplay i am civil with.

Hmm..well I don't listen to "copy-daily-radiohead-mainstream-bands" But really? Who the fuck gives about this and that? Yes,yes and yes there are many stupid as fuck rh-fans, but I find it very preposterous and disturbing when the "true" rh fans criticising the "rest" of the fans all the time. In fact, they are more "true" rh fans that complain about the "other" rh fans, just because of their bad taste in music/ignorance. And now I end this shit with a cliché, "this is coming from a fan that have listen to rh in many years".

Actually? No I'm not done, please don't waste your time commenting about my mispellins or grammar, because english not my main language. Thank you.

  • radiohead fans have eclectic (albeit not necessarily good) taste because radiohead are the biggest band in the world, so you're gonna expect everything from coldplay to merzbow to be under the umbrella 'stuff radiohead fans like'

muse are very much radiohead influenced but with a more ostentatious kind of self-indulgence on matt bellamy's part, but OoS and Absolution are definitely good albums. similarly, chris martin is a bit of a tool, but parachutes and AROBTTH are at least decent.
