I think anyone who experienced wordpress would agree, that the customizability and openess of WP makes it very easy to use it for arbitrary websites, especially if there is a need to periodically publish news, which obviously is the case for artists.
Regarding the thousands of plugins and themes you can use to extend a basic wordpress install, everyone should find himself satisfied.

Last but not least, we do use wordpress for this purpose, I guess unfortunately for most of you it's a german rock band called 7ieben, with german lyrics and therefore a german website.

If there are some other people using WP in this way, I might have something for you...

If you're an artist on the web 2.0 trip and are posting all your upcoming gigs on last.fm - why the hell you have to maintain another list and fill in all details twice?

You don't have to. Just use this plugin and your wordpress blog pulls a fully customizable list of your upcoming gigs in your wordpress sidebar (it even supports mashing up with GoogleMaps). And if that's not enough, addidtionally you can also pull the last.fm top tracks of an artist in the same, full customizable manner. Check it out and spread the word.
