my child will do as they please.

  • trying to raise a child to be a vegetarian or vegan is just as bad as raising a child to be a certain religion, my child will do as he/she pleases

  • I've been thinking about this a lot. You have to choose whether or not to feed your children meat during the first years of their life, before they are able to decide for themselves. But by the time they an decide for themselves, they will be so used to the lifestyle that they've been following until then that they'll be less likely to deviate from it. They've already been veg*an/omnivore for x amount of years, why change now? I wouldn't buy any animal products, but if my children ever want to I won't stop them

  • hmmmm... this is a toughy. without the protien from meat they may not grow and develope to their full potential.. but hey, who wants kids that are taller than themselves?
i guess id wait until they could make an informed decision on their own. yeah, that sounds about right.. but theres no way in hell that id cook the meat for the little buggers.

  • heck yes! if you're a girl without animal protein intake, you get your period at 17 on average. In America, the average age is 11. This all leads to higher cancer/disease rates later (i.e. breast cancer).

POINT: it makes a difference even from a young age. they don't need meat and they certainly don't need milk.

feeding your child with meat is irresponsible. i would say the same about eggs and dairy. if you feed your children (while they are your responsibility) ''not vegan '' you are parent that DOES NOT care. just like smoking, drugs and alcohol, animal products are even worse.

btw you are supposed to teach your children what is right and what is wrong. i think that is your responsibility as a parent O_o. ...i think.
and it s their choice to decide what will they do, when they are no longer under your roof.

''without the protien from meat they may not grow and develope to their full potential'' ---> what ?

''trying to raise a child to be a vegetarian or vegan is just as bad as raising a child to be a certain religion''
--> so you are gonna impose meat to your child ? wow. just wow.

well i change my mind. i think the best thing would be to let our children choose what they want. yes. that sounds right. basketball or football. pink or blue. book or movie. drugs or no drugs. meat or veggies. it s all good

"hmmmm... this is a toughy. without the protien from meat they may not grow and develope to their full potential.. but hey, who wants kids that are taller than themselves?"

    hahahahahahahaha

There are plenty of non-meat alternatives for protein which will work on children and infants.

All a parent can do is raise them in a manner they believe is right. Once they are old enough to make their own decisions the parent's job for the most part is done.

What is anything if not something else?

    Of course.

There's no reason whatsoever to force a child to eat meat. Even setting aside the philosophical/ethical concerns for the moment, eating a diet filled with meat and dairy is unhealthy and unnecessary. Now, I know that once the kid reaches school age, he or she will probably want to sneak a taste of meat here or there, and that's fine by me. At school, at a friend's house, at a restaurant... whatever. As long as it's not in my home, I don't care.

I certainly don't want to be some super-strict, vegan parent who demands 100% vegan purity at all times. That sort of attitude would probably turn the kid off to veganism completely (as a matter of fact, I think that's what turns off most adults, too). I think the best thing I can do for my child's health and well-being is to just be an example of a happy, healthy, vegan dude. Hopefully he or she will want to emulate me.

My house will be free of animal products.

  • I would raise my child/children vegan. Not even a single hesitation.

well if I had a child it would be adopted and it would be their choice.

however if I hypothetically had a child from birth, I think I would introduce them to meat and dairy products while they are young and if they want they can continue or discontinue use.

I would want the child to be on team V more than not, however I don't think absence is the way to go about doing it.

if any of you plan on feeding your baby soy milk instead of breast milk you should be placed before a firing squad.

no i would let th ebaby atleast eat fish or the like because becoming vegan/vegetarian is a personal decision and it should not be inforced on someone who has no perspective let alone opinion on why to be so , plus it would be detrimental to their health.

  • yes, yes, yes, go vegan! do it now!

my boyfriend and i are in an open adoption and we are definitely going to raise the child as a vegan. i have been a vegan for over 17 years and my boyfriend has been a vegetarian for over 10 years. we are currently in an open adoption match w/ another vegan couple, so the fetus has been vegan since conception.

first off, i want to say that inessesanssouci and DemonAmant had some excellent points. i was shocked to see people advocating eating meat on this forum. is this the meateaters forum on last.fm? there needs to be some serious education and re-evaluation of why some of you are vegetarian or vegan. start reading and educating yourselves! there's a great revised edition of vegan freak that just came out this year, as well as a massive amount of resources on-line or at your local library. hop to it! go vegan and stay vegan.

I can't imagine raising a child anything but vegan. Meat and dairy cause a heap of problems, and I would care about my child too much to expose them to those things.

I think my child will have to decide. But I'm sure I won't cook any unvegetarian things for it if it won't want to be a vegetarian...

Yes, definitely. Feed a kid with meat and dairy products that comes from other animal is like to let them smoke and drink alcohol. Bad for their health and the environment. I feel sorry for my brother and sister. :(

exactly...i feel if i was to have a kid.... obviously the formative years the kid would be vegetarian....once s/he reached a certain level of maturity....i would certainly like the kid to think for themselves....with my objective criticism.....i would also explain to the kid that if they choose to eat meat....although i disagree with the decision....it is theirs...but...i will not cook them meat dishes....and will not support their decision financially.....and obviously they would have to get their own pots and pans

I think, I would let my child choose it himself. Till s/he's 8 or 10. Then I'll show him/her some videos, so s/he understands why I got vegetarian. Maybe s/he will choose same way, maybe he won't. His/Her choice.

  • I won't provide it, nor will I tell them what to do. Should my child decide that it isn't the lifestyle they want, I won't stop them from making that decision. Just as my parents were okay with me going vegan.

  • I would not force it on my child but in my house there would be no meat or animal products. I would not force my child to be vegetarian or vegan, as in they can eat what they wish outside of the house to their hearts content but not a scrap of that would enter my door. It would be up to them to live how they want outside but not in regards to the animal products in the home I am paying for.
