I'm a vegetarian and I've got a normal weight, not skinny, not overweight. Some of my friends are vegetarians, too and they're not skinny either.

    It doesn't matter.

I have had times in which I eated once in two days over months; then times I have all the meals. Never under 58kg and never under 62kg.
    Yes, I'm a lucky motherfucker.

I have lost weight since i switched from lacto-ovo-vegetarism to strict veganism. Though, it's hard to tell is it simply because change in diet or because I also run a lot. But I believe the diet has had a part in it, since having a slice or two of cheese on your bread, cooking with eggs etc can add up to lot of calories at the end of the day.
I loved cheese, so I think replacing it with vegetables has had an impact on my weight.

Cheese is rich in fat and therefore rich in calories.
No fruit or vegetable can replace those huge amounts of fat but acutally they don't need to be recplaced. Too much fat is pretty bad for your heart circulation system and pancreas, too less fat is pretty bad for your whole body.
Keep an eye on nuts and oils (especially those rich in Omega-3 fatty acids) and on fruits rich in fructose ('cause our bodies can easily transform that into fat and carb depots).

Eat some oat flakes with orange juice or a muesli and a banana an hour before you go running, this way your carbohydrate depots won't be needed as much for energy production as usual.

Or... don't change a thing if you're not feeling toooo lightweight 'cause your body might has reached its natural weight without those cheese fats.

I believe my diet is quite balanced, I do throw a spoonful of nuts and seeds to my salads, add olive oil etc. And I feel better than ever :)

I've always been skinny, as is everyone on my mother's side of my family. Since I switched to a veggie diet I've put on (a little) weight for the first time in my life, which I put down to better food and a far more varied diet. I'm also eating more just because I'm getting more enjoyment from food and cooking in general.

Guys, I am a little overweight (about 5 kg too much) and I'm a vegan. :P Cookies have too much power x) No seriously, I cannot see why being a veggie means you have to be skinny.

Gather the faithful and propose a toast.
  • I've been vegan for two and a half years and I'm quite chubby. Technically obese if you go by bmi, but only by five pounds (also bmi is shit). I lost forty pounds when I went vegan, but that was mostly because I had no idea what I was doing and starvation > exploiting animals any longer. I haven't put the weight back on though, which is slightly weird when I think about it.

I think it's weird that veg people would be skinnier, as what you eat is one of many factors determining your weight/size.

I've met plenty of fat vegans. Hell, I was one for a few years. Technically still am (working on it). Bread is KILLER.

I've been veg/vegan since about 12 so I don't have anything to compare it to.

  • I'M A TOTAL FAT TWAT! Being vegan/veggie doesn't mean you're healthy. But then again, being big doesn't mean you're unhealthy. If you exercise enough, it shouldn't matter really. YEAH, I SHOULD TOTALLY GET ON THAT

  • i've friend who has gained a lot of pounds when she was vegan

but don't be scared, i go to work every day on my old bicycle you loved.

Fat vegans are fat because they eat more per day than the necessary to provide them the energy that they usually consume in their normal activities, not necessarily because they eat "wrong", as we can read in a lot of answers here (unless you define "eat a lot" as "eat wrong", and then I would have to agree... laugh). Oh, yes: I eat a lot and I'm fat.

By the way, it's just the same way it is with non-vegetarians/non-vegans (of course!). Most of people eat "wrong", and if it was equal to being fat, almost everyone would be fat.

It's very easy to become overweight when you eat a lot of bread. As a vegetarian/vegan that was never very fond of vegetables, this was a big problem for me. Haha. I've now limited my bread consumption and lost about 25 lbs

Becoming overweight as a vegan isn't much more difficult than becoming overweight as someone who eats everything.
Lots of vegan chocolate out there - beware, indeed! :P
Also, as mentioned, even simple things like bread contain lots and LOTS of calories.

Hell, even as a raw-only fruitarian it would be quite easy to become overweight.

  • Most people these days eat meat and are thin (at least in my country). But I am not skinny at all :D I like to eat a lot, I just don't eat meat

I'm skinny, but used to be overweight as an omnivore, vegetarian and even as a vegan. However, now that I'm mostly raw and not sitting around all day, I've lost tons of weight.
